One of the most boring albums I've heard recently, as a fan of 'Dummy' this bears little resemblance to what was an amazing sound with amazing vocals. Here the music sounds old and tired, the vocals are nowhere near as impressive and it greatly disappointed me that only one track (magic doors) comes anywhere near to the brilliance of 'Dummy'.
Every other track on this album is monotonous and a waste of time - but hey perhaps you'll like it! For me I can think of many other groups who still push the boundaries and make interesting tunes while Portishead wallow in this dreary depressing rubbish that doesn't even compare to their debut from ten years ago(?)

3 and a bit stars as an album, with one 5 star song...
Yes, definitely an album for 'particular' tastes; never going to be 'mainstream' with a collection of songs like this.
Commendable for their 'experimentalism' with song structuring and instrumental/electronic arrangements.
However, I'm principally writing this blurb to tell one and all about the song called 'Baby Said' - it is an absolute golden nugget of a song tucked away near the end of this album...simple yet sublime...check it out.
Personally I find the vocals unique and engaging - the lead singer is an artist whose voice doesn't sound like a dozen others'...always refreshing...
And yes, as one reviewer said, t'was worth ... Read More:

If there was a 'problem' with the original New Forms it was that although it opened a lot of new doors for the drum'n'bassy side of electronic music, it rarely if ever broke out into full-on actual drum'n'bass. It was more jazzy and abstract, often having stretches of build up that would lead into more build up, then kind of nothing... These new 're-licks' are effectively VIP remixes of the originals and they all sound designed for the dancefloor, rather than the headphones/beard-stroking room. For example 'Brown Paper Bag' is transformed from a monolithic 9-minute prog-jazz freakout, to 4 minutes of punchy jump-up (complete with an MC), but it still retains its weird, dark edginess. Likewise, if the original of 'Heroes' was a bit too downtempo ... Read More:

Like Memoryhouse, Max Richter's sadly deleted first CD, this album is suffused with a forlorn melancholia. The quotes from Franz Kafka (beautifully read by Tilda Swinton), compound the feeling that this is a nostalgic homage to the lost world of East European cultures that were shattered by Stalinist purges and Nazi pogroms. The standout track, 'The Shadow Journal', is impossibly beautiful, distilling the album's sense of loss into an achingly sad refrain for violin and, suprisingly, a jay!
Small but perfectly formed.

This is the second cd from Azam Ali's latest musical outing. If you have heard the first cd then you will know what to expect from this as it is basically more of the same. Outstanding vocals and eastern arrangements and rhythms. The use of electronics is used to enhance the sound and is done very well. Interestingly the second cd is made up of acoustic versions of 8 of the 9 tracks on the first cd and give a wonderful insight into the source material.
All are written by Niyaz except for 2 Iranian folk tunes and one Turkish folk tune.
There is a deep spiritual feel to this cd. If you like mid-eastern music with a modern twist or the later sounds of bands like Dead Can Dance then I cannot recommend this cd high enough.
This shows a much darker, more foreboding side to TD's work of the period. It's interesting to hear shorter pieces too, which works well for me. The style is very much in keeping with "Stratosfear" and also "Encore" and, listening to it again, I think it's rather better than both......
I'd also like to echo the question What of the "other" 45 minutes they recorded for this film? Is it worth releasing? Even if it's more of the same, or the existing tracks expanded I'd buy it...

This is like nothing else I've heard, even from FSOL. I must admit I wondered what on earth I'd bought when I first heard it, but once I'd got to the end I got it. Swirls of ambient noise give way to some of the most beautiful electronic melodies you can imagine.
It's got loads in common with classical music, you have refrains that pop in and out at various points throughout the album, in fact they even sample Pachabel's 'Canon in D' in 'Domain'. This isn't a pop record. You can't just stick it on whilst you wander round the house and expect to like it. You have to actually sit down and listen to it as a whole to appreciate just how amazing it is.
Highly recommended, but the recommendation comes with a warning to expect the unexpected! ... Read More:
