Anyone who subtitles there LP `The Difficult Third Album' is not building up peoples expectations and although `Taxman' may have been `Difficult' for its author for the listener it is an absolute delight.
The album opens strongly with what would become its second single `Greetings to the New Brunette' with Bragg's aching guitar being complimented by John Porter on Bass and Johnny Marr on guitar (respectively The Smiths producer and guitarist) and backing vocals provided by the late Kirsty MacColl whom had done more for promoting Bragg then anyone else by getting her `Pop' cover of Bragg's `A New England' into the charts. Although many mourned the death of pure `Urban' folk it has to be said that the enthusiasm for a further album ... Read More:

Understated, underrated.
Understated is one thing, underrated is another.
In fact, it's a masterly selection. Why doesn't it have more reviews? Why isn't it top of the pops? Oh, I see. Not good Enough for the Great British Public. Silly of me not to realise.
A rich range, containing Home and Away, Sea and Empire, war and love, history. Should be a compulsory part of the National Curriculum. Bet there's plenty of stuff they could ditch that covers the same ground [or less] much more boringly.
The music shows the man: one who knew his country and loved it.
I didn't know the English had so many good songs. I knew they had a few, but thought the Celts were the only ones in these islands ... Read More:

Nick Drakes music is sublime but you probably know that already.
The best way of hearing great music in the home is via top quality vinyl through a top quality system. Sadly, however, this shoddy vinyl release misses the mark completely. This vinyl edition is far from audiophile.
There is excessive surface noise and the sound lacks clarity. Do not buy this, buy the new 200g Japanese editions of 5 Leaves Left or Bryter Later as they sound fantastic. Even the CD edition of Treasury sounds better than this!

This is imaginative, free-spirited rock music at its very best. It sits alongside 'Stormcock' as Roy Harper's trio of classic lps (I'd have the live set 'Flashes From Archives Of Oblivion' as the third). It carries the same lyrical, musical and mystical weight as Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here' - released in the same year. I'd give Roy Harper the edge here for the purity of the intention behind this work. An intention that is realised. Very well done, Mr Harper.

This was the first live album released by Fairport and dates from the period between the release of "Nine" and "Rising for the Moon" when Sandy Denny was performing with the band again but before she formally rejoined them. There is so much archive live and back-catalogue material available from Fairport these days that my first reaction to this remastered reissue was to note it, but not to rush ahead and buy it. Eventually I took the plunge and was very pleasantly surprised by what I heard - this is a classic set that benefits from the remastering treatment.
The original 1974 album contained nine tracks, recorded at three venues - the Rainbow Theatre (London), Fairfield Hall (Croydon) and the Sydney Opera House, although it is not revealed ... Read More:

I've just googled Bobby's name after listening to his lovely voice again on the Collected burns CDs, and read about his death three years ago. What a loss. His versions on these 5 hand reel discs of songs like Red red rose, ae fond kiss, Carrickfergus, Earl of Moray...are just utterly utterly beautiful. He really should have recorded a lot more. A great Scottish voice.

Worthwhile getting if only to listen to track eight, "Geordie" which I first listened to in 1976 (if my memory is not playing tricks with me). As for the rest, time HAS caught up with me and as folk is not something I listen on a regular and avid basis, you'll have to take my word for it.
