Donovan is simply one of those genius singer sonwriters who kept producing wonderful, evocotive and beautifully realised songs but was also a brilliant interpreter of other peoples songs. Here he is on top form. He took a step back from the mainstream pop oreientated music with which he had become associated. That is not the devalue any of that work, it is wonderful too, however, this is a perfectly realised Donovan album that exudes a towering writing and performing confidence. The songs here are as fresh as the day they were written.

This is a nice mellow album, it is not enhanced by the presence of Beverley Martyn. John was wise to go it alone after this, because Bev can't sing, she hasn't got a very good voice. Otherwise an enjoyable edition to the Martyn Canon.

Worthwhile getting if only to listen to track eight, "Geordie" which I first listened to in 1976 (if my memory is not playing tricks with me). As for the rest, time HAS caught up with me and as folk is not something I listen on a regular and avid basis, you'll have to take my word for it.

Rumor and Sigh

This album was the first RT studio album I bought. At first I was encouraged, whilst 'Read about Love' clattered off to start the experience in my ear phones, that his band were pedigree rock muso's. Steve Gadd on drums, never bad.

It just got better. The lyrics are inspired, at times funny, tender, emotive, angry, ironic. The flamboyant and oft impressive guitar work provides a source of deep satisfaction through-out the album. 'Psycho Street'; my opinion, a fun listen the first time, I skip it now.

For me the meat on this bone in the Thompson body of work is juicy and nutritious. 'Read About Love', 'I Missunderstood', 'Keep Your Distance', 'You Dream Too Much', 'Why Must I Plead', 'Vincent...' are all tremendous contributions ... Read More:

frank is an important figure in the singer/songwriter world, being as he was one of the earliest in the field along with dylan and simon.

but how does his work stand up 40+ plus years later in the cold light of day? surprisingly - very well. the title track is worth the price of admission alone being a very nice song indeed. the other two highlights are 'milk and honey' (beautifully covered by bonnie dobson. havent heard nick drakes version if there was one)and 'dialogue' (the definitive version of which can be found on julie felix's 'flowers' album) - the rest of the material is not quite as strong but theres some nice stuff going on throughout.

Sleepless

I love the voice, the tunes, the backing vocals and instrumentation.

I REALLY love the Yorkshire accent - one of my pet hates is UK performers singing with US accents.

But I just thought the theeing and thouing was a bit overdone. I got the impression Kate probably has a mild Yorkshire accent, which she puts on overdrive when she's singing, and that, plus the overdone folksy, Victorian feel to the album can start to grate after a while.

There's been a lot said about 'mockney' media figures, and maybe Kate's the Yorkshire equivalent - Morkney?

Still, the music and the voice are great, and I look forward to hearing more, with a slightly toned down and updated accent.

Talking With the Taxman About Poetry: Expanded Edition

Anyone who subtitles there LP `The Difficult Third Album' is not building up peoples expectations and although `Taxman' may have been `Difficult' for its author for the listener it is an absolute delight.

The album opens strongly with what would become its second single `Greetings to the New Brunette' with Bragg's aching guitar being complimented by John Porter on Bass and Johnny Marr on guitar (respectively The Smiths producer and guitarist) and backing vocals provided by the late Kirsty MacColl whom had done more for promoting Bragg then anyone else by getting her `Pop' cover of Bragg's `A New England' into the charts. with the combination of great fiddle playing and that amazing voice,eliza has recorded some songs on this album,which will always be my favourite eliza carthy tunes,namely the americans have stolen my true love away and the collection of fiddle tunes zycanthos jig/tommys foot/quebecois,which show what a great fiddle player she is,tunes to tap your toes to.
