I've just googled Bobby's name after listening to his lovely voice again on the Collected burns CDs, and read about his death three years ago. What a loss. His versions on these 5 hand reel discs of songs like Red red rose, ae fond kiss, Carrickfergus, Earl of Moray...are just utterly utterly beautiful. He really should have recorded a lot more. A great Scottish voice.

This is stardust, this is golden. Well, sort of. The version of Joni Mitchell’s ‘Woodstock’ included here was the very first single I bought by myself without the aid of a parent, so it is special for me. Years later the chiming introduction and the golden toned harmonies still exert a hold over me. But what of the rest of this compilation? The rest is mostly accomplished country rock with a number of Matthews compositions and covers of songs by such as Neil Young, Richard Thompson and James Taylor. By the time Sandy Denny returned to the fold for this album, Richard Thompson had left and Dave Swarbrick had become the focus for the Fairport sound. Consequently, there's a feeling that occasionally the vision of Denny and Swarb clashed on this album and the whole fails to hang together, with some songs like 'Night-time girl' sounding lightweight and hideously like fillers.

Denny's husband Trevor Lucas chips in with some good railroad type songs to keep the album moving but, when Sandy Denny starts singing her own songs, then everything falls into focus and you can forgive the band anything as then this album sounds as good as anything the 'classic' Fairport line-up produced. This is one of many of Bert's 'best' albums.. and there are a few of those but every track (almost) is a classic example of his unique treatment of tone and key, and an evocative, dark, brooding style which completely sums up the traditional song in raw human terms. No one else can deal with the pain of love lost, anguish, revenge, and folklore mystery as Bert can.

Having a natural affinity for his invented and almost atonal tunings, and a similarly gravel edged vocal style, I still however struggle to get anywhere near this good.Bert constantly amazes and the tracks here are wonderfully dark, full of mystery myth and adventure.. and he is very much at his mature best here.. a classic album. This is one of my favourites among Martin Carthy's solo albums and one of the best British folk records of the 1970s. Don't be put off by the rather oldey-worldey picture on the album cover (1970s whimsy perhaps?); Carthy's choice of material is always interesting and his distinctive percussive guitar-playing style at its best. There are some crackers among the songs, like the traditional ballads "Willie's Lady" and "The Bonny Lass o' Anglesey" and a moving version of Leon Rosselson's "Palaces of Gold", written in the wake of the Aberfan mining disaster.

The re-releases keep rolling on.Don't get me wrong,i'm The Big Mans greatest fan,but....How many more record companies are going to cash in on John mismanaged career?The man never cared much for looking after his affairs whilst on a permenent self destruct course.Now over his long career we have endured re-releases of old song,dvds going back a million years.He defenitely holds the record for his songs re-appearing on different live gigs.I think in the last 20 years or so we have had about 6 fresh albums from John.The Apprentice,Cooltide,And,Glasgow Walker and On The Cobbles.I'm going to hold tough on this one.If you've never investigated John Martyns music,you don't know what your missing but personally i'd start somewhere else.Try get your hands on Live At The ... so you've got bert jansch one of the greatest folk guitarists or guitarists of all time and john renbourne the most immatated guitarist of his time,jacqui mcshee who i can only discribe as the beth orton of her time (she also shares likeness' with nico from the velvet underground), and danny thompson on bass and terry cox on drums and what do you get?...possibly the greatest fusions of folk, jazz, blues of all time, possibly even one of the greatest albums of its time. This record is quintessentially sixties. If you like your blues, your folk, your jazz, buy this album. I love it and you will too, i can almost guarantee.

Sir John Alot Of Merrie Englandes Musyk Thyng & Ye Grene Knyghte

Anyone with just the slightest love for guitar music should own an album by Renbourn. This is from his early period, and it showcases his technique and style with a wit and humour that other Renbourn records don't have. Personally, I prefer his reworks of very old midieval material, but the other tunes are just as good. This album, along with "Another Monday", makes a perfect document of Renbourn music.
