What can one say that has already been said by others about the master of electric contemporary folk other than this is album is truly superb with the normal underpinning of RT's gravely voice and incredible mastery of the guitar in his laid back style.

From the opening chords of "Gethsemane" to the closing bars of Happy Days and Old Lang Syne" this album delights not only because one can appreciate the skills of RT and his backing musicians but also because the lyrics of this album make one think throughout.

Listen to the anti fundamentalist polemic of "Outside of the Inside" to songs about lost loves such as "One Door Opens" to "First Breath" As normal with RT he tends to concentrate on what has been lost rather than ... Read More:

Stormbringer

This is a nice mellow album, it is not enhanced by the presence of Beverley Martyn. John was wise to go it alone after this, because Bev can't sing, she hasn't got a very good voice. Otherwise an enjoyable edition to the Martyn Canon.

Mock Tudor

This album once again displays Thompson's mastery of styles to great effect, whilst the looser production represents a break with the albums that came before. For example, there is beautiful harmonica on Cooksferry Queen and excellent acoustic guitar playing on Sights And Sounds Of London. One of the highlights is the poetic masterpiece Walking The Long Miles Home. Uninhabited Man, Hard On Me and Bathsheba Smiles are powerful and intense rock songs about loss and regret. This is a superb album of memorable songs that match the best tracks on Amnesia and Rumor And Sigh. As to be expected, his guitar playing is brilliant throughout. Mock Tudor is right up there with Thompsn's best work of the last ten years.

5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion

I only just got this on CD.
When I first heard it (C1968) I loved it dearly, but only ever had access to a loaned and worn copy of the LP to play on a crappy BSR radiogram that partially achieved some stereo effect when you put your head in the cupboard provided for storing discs. The beautiful production by Joe Boyd was, therfore, a revelation when I played the CD.
The songs are a perfect pivot between the simple folky style of the Stringbands first album and the complex masterpiece that is "Hangman's". The numbers, particularly the more pop stylee ones, like "First Girl" and "Paintingbox" are just so evocative and beautifully crafted. I have always regarded 'Nine' as being among the best Fairport albums, representing the brief flowering of the post Nicol/Thompson band before the return of Sandy Denny changed the musical direction again. The previous album 'Rosie' was something of a stopgap but had marked the arrival of Trevor Lucas and Jerry Donahue, both former members of Sandy's band Fotheringay, and on 'Nine' they make major contributions. Lucas's rich and resonant voice and Donahue's fluent lead guitar were completely different from their predecessors, Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson, but they gave a distinctive tone to a revitalised and cohesive musical unit built on the sure foundation of the three Daves. The opener is one of the weaker points of this album, though this is perhaps because the rest is of such good quality! It is basically a tale of falling in love with someone who is a bit of a no-no at the mo, still s##t happens, hey? Never mind `Time Will Show The Wiser' - so that's the answer! Next - `I Don't Know Where I Stand' kind of takes us to hippy heaven - a sweet, lovely, gentle and innocent place (I guess), where Joni Mitchell puts her awesome siren-like voice to good use. `If (Stomp)', again perhaps, is his reply - yeah right feller, `if only' hey? A nice tune, average for this album, but suiting in its melancholy. `Life's a Riot with Spy vs. Spy' would take some beating without appearing to repeat his self but Billy Bragg managed to put out a further set of Urban Folk on `Brewing Up' which built on the foundations of `Spy vs. Spy' while improving as not only a writer but also as a performer.

`Brewing Up' opens perfectly with `It Says Here' setting out his politics and framing them with enough shared experience to ensure we empathise before moving onto the love songs which are rooted in reality with `Love Gets Dangerous', `The Myth of Trust', `From a Vauxhall Velox' and most successfully on `The Saturday Boy' which as a slice of teenage angst is one of the most fully realised songs of all time.

The Very Best Of The Pogues

Released as The Pogues first started their now annual Christmas tours this album is, as the wrapper proclaims, `The Very Best of The Pogues'.

Not as complete as a full compliment of the original five Pogues albums or the two volume `best of/rest of' compilations it is a perfect introduction to one of the greatest bands to ever stand up, or even fall over, on stage.

Although omissions are easy to spot `Thousands Are Sailing' and `The Repeal of the Licensing Laws' being obvious, it does contain `The Band Played Waltzing Matilda' and so what we loose on the swings we gain on the roundabouts. Not that you can loose with this album, everyone a winner. If you don't own any Pogues albums, buy this one, you won't regret it.
