Many artists have attempted to sum up the sadness and frustrations of those in impovershed communities. In doing so, many of these have aimed to offer genuine hope and encouragement at the same time. Issues such as poverty, gun crime, and oppression of working classes and ethnic minorities are not unusual song subjects. And yet, from punk to gangsta rap, I would defy you to find an artist who can sum them all up so eloquently and compassionately as Tracy Chapman.
The collection (chosen by Tracy herself) opens with Fast Car, the song which made her a star almost overnight. With its beautiful and subtle melody, the song draws the attention immediately, but the lyrics are the real star, delivering a bittersweet message about socail problems ... Read More:

Sounds like we have a consensus out there!
The Sensual World failed ( commercially ) to match the massive success of 'Hounds Of Love'. It's hard to know why. Maybe the time was right for that album - and who can deny that 'Running up that Hill' and 'Cloudbusting' are some of the finest singles ever. Maybe Kate just left it too long, as she often does, and the world had moved on.
The Sensual World succeeds as a great album however. It's cornerstone is undeniably 'This Woman's Work' which reliably brings tears to my eyes. I'm still not really sure what it's about - at one level Kate seems to be at the bedside of her dying mother, while on another the line 'I know you have a little life in you yet' could be about a mother to be. Genius.

This album does not have one bad track on it! It is refreshing, original, haunting and absolutely fabulous. It stands the test of time and continues to provide entertainment at the highest value. This is Kate Bush at her best.
Release Date November 05, 2001
This is the best of three of their albums and it does have some great songs on and by the best of the albums I mean the singles. If it was the best of the three combined albums then this would be an amazing album and it is still amazing in it's own right with two bonus tracks on as well as two live tracks from their MTV Unpluuged album.
It is a great play from start to finish, if you like the Corrs but don't know which album to buy then buy this because you get a bit of their albums on on CD.

It has taken me a while to come around to Sarah's music. Perhaps this is because I was not mature enough to appreciate it when she first started out (I was a teenager when this album was originally released). My tastes have changed over the years and I am glad that I didn't buy this until I was 'ready' for it. FUMBLING TOWARDS ECSTASY is a beautiful album, but as another has pointed out, there are moments that the pain drips from her words.
People on Amazon have starred this as her masterpiece - because this is the first and only album that I have by Sarah, I cannot comment on the validity of this, but what I can say is that the amount of talent she has is undeniable. Her lyrics are intelligent and can almost read like poetry. She also has an amazing voice - shown to great effect ... Read More:

Gabrielle will claim herself that she is nota soul singer as she simply doesn't possess the voice to be one. But she is a good solid and consistant performer who has churned out some really nice tracks in the last 10 years.
I'm into Rnb/Soul/Hip Hop, but I have no problem saying that I own this really good set of songs. Her music has never been groundbreaking, but has always been good.
"Dreams" is her signature track, and most people's favourite Gabrielle track. I know it is mine. Its her story. It what she is about. Its a perfect track and one which she will always be able to say is a "classic". This track will get played on radio in another 10 years time. "Going Nowhere" is a track with that 90's feel which is catchy but its track 3 "I Wish" which I love. Its about ... Read More:

I have to admit that until recently, Sheryl Crow was one of those highly successful American artists who just passed me by, purely because I tend to dislike American MOR, and that I find the Americans often dish out Grammys to the most mundane or tasteless of pop musicians. Crow has won more than a few of these awards over a long career. Although I knew and quite liked 'All I Wanna Do' and her version of 'The First Cut Is The Deepest'(both are on this CD), my overall opinion of Ms. Crow has changed. What prompted this was seeing her on Jools Holland's TV programme in May 2008, when she performed live an excellent song she'd written called 'Out Of Our Heads', which I couldn't get out of my head for days afterwards. I decided then to investigate this intelligent and politically outspoken lady's talents a bit ... Read More:

I stumbled across this Carly Simon album on Amazon and snapped it up as soon as I saw it because it contained so many of my favourite childhood records (You're So Vain, Nobody Does it Better etc.). A brilliant album and worth every penny.

It looks promising, though the editing is ghastly and som of the songs, like "Bad Girl", "Rain", "Fever", "You'll See", "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" and "This Used To Be My Playground" aren't on there though in my opinion I think they ... Read More:

I'm worried about the 2-star lad...if he can't get his head round the first four tracks - Marlene is good but the weakest of the 4 - then his taste-o-meter needs to be serviced. Cracked and Small Blue thing are sublime, simple, strong tunes perfect for Vega's sing/speak clear voice.
I normally go for songs with a bit more pep but this is quality stuff.
I do agree with some comments that it runs out of steam thereafter and consider there is a terrific album between this and the at-times over-produced Solitude Standing.
I will check out Queen and the Soldier again, thanks for the heads up.
