I am a great admirer of Maddy prior, not least because to me she represents the true voice of English Folk Music and is not afraid to champion the 'English' song in this day and age of so called correctness. English Folk Music is amongst the best music in the world and this CD is no exception. There are some great melodies here both sung and played so well that it is a joy to listen to. I cannot imagine a world without Maddy's music - with or without Steeleye Span and the Carnival band that she sings with. To me the real gem of this collection is 'Magpie', her own composition which was shelved for over forty years until now and never fails to send a shiver down my spine and a tear to my eye whenever I play it. "Want One" is, all things considered, Rufus Wainwright's best album. It is here that he perfected his baroque take on musical magic realism (which he fairly sustained through to "Want Two"), before his frankly surprising creative collapse on "Release The Stars" and subsequent escape into the qualitatively inconsistent cabaret pastiche of "Rufus Does Judy".
Here, proceedings get started on a pleasantly leftist note with "Oh What A World". The appropriately named "I Don't Know What It Is" cranks things up considerably, but keeps its meaning to itself. The pleasant electronic keyboard extravaganza of "Vicious World" recalls Stevie Wonder, while "Pretty Things" proves Rufus and plain piano go quite well together on their own.

Driving home one day last Autumn the song 'Roots', featured on this album, was played on a radio 4 show and the hairs flew up on the back of my neck! The song is a great thumping polemic on the loss of our english identity and our stories and songs - our roots, something very close to my heart. It is not a jingoistic nationalist rant but it does question, forcibly, why we are so happy to accept plastic massed produced entertainment instead of looking toward our own rich culture. Anyway, I pre-ordered the album when I got home on the strength of that one track and it has hardly left the cd player since. When I first listened to this album about 5 years ago, I completely disliked it apart from the title track, even though I was pretty open to a vast range of music. I think the hardest thing to get used to is the high voice on some of the songs.

After a while I began listening to the other tracks and became ashamed for having avoided them so long. Not long after I warmed to the voice and now believe he is probably the best male singer to have graced my ears.

At a glance the album can seem so normal, and too soft.. But is all part of the delicacy of the music, the subtlety of slides in dynamics and timbres send shivers down my spine. It helps to have a very realistic sounding Hi Fi to get the full effect of it all!

Richard Thompson had always stood out in earlier Fairport albums with his songwriting and guitar work but it was this album where he was essentialy taking the band where he wanted it to go. That's not to say the other members don't make thier mark, Dave Swarbick performs some of his best violin solos on this album and Simon Nicol begins making his mark as a singer and guitarist.
Obviously, none of the band could compare to Sandy Denny on vocals, so they use vocal harmonies instead consisting usually of Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol, Dave Swarbick and Ashley Hutchings replacement Dave Pegg who create a beutiful vocal track by singing together.

Lots of people tend to miss out on the depth of this album simply beacuse of the over exposure of the title track.

If that is in fact the case, there are many people missing out on an album full of emotions and songs that will evoke all kinds of memories for each individual listener.

Empty Chairs and 'till tommrow are almost too joyously painful to listen to and Crossroads is a most wonderful creation that stirs past, present and future.

Don't listen to the hype about Don Mclean.

Try him out for yourself and then decide.

I'm not sure that the cross-over success of All Around My Hat in 1975 did Steeleye Span or the folk-movement any long term favours. They never hit the charts again, and folk and folk-rock, both undergoing something of a renaissance, began their retreat underground, though there is no proven link between the two. The producers of Top Of The Pops may have relished the thought of the band in pixie-garb and tinkling bells skipping around a maypole, Pan's People style, but trivialising hundreds of years of folk heritage to the level of the Wombles couldn't ultimately enhance the movement's credibility. I bought this album because i stumbled across the song 'who will sing me lullabies' on youtube and well what can i say it's just so beautiful. Every song makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end ( in a good way). I can't imagine anyone not liking this her voice is so brilliant and i love the way her accent shines through it's truly an amazing album.
