To say Nick Cave isn't the force he once was, is like saying Vlad the Impaler had minor anger management issues. Glories LONG gone, he's resorting to loose balladeering and conventional rock in a vain and desperate attempt to disguise the fact he's got nothing new to say and should've given up on this music thing a long time ago.
A new Nick Cave album is cause for despair, where once it was cause for celebration. Ok, you can't go on re-living past triumphs (ask Morrissey) but the guy must have SOME of that early threat and purpose kicking around somewhere. Where's the gusto and urgency that drove classics like 'Nick the Stripper' or 'Mr Clarinet' ?
He's become a rock dullard, a pale imitation, a caricature of all he once meant.

Like others, I saw the man on Jools Holland. I suppose the romantic in me loved the idea that this guy had experienced the lowest of the lows but had come through it all and was here playing his 3-string geetar live on the JH show. However, I liked what I heard and his enthusiasm for the blues was infectious. Okay, it's not as polished as the great blues musicians and he's not going to outdo Robert Cray for technical ability but just listen to the stories he tells and you'll be tapping your foot along. We all love to see people do well that have faced grim adversity and Seasick Steve provides a soulful, bizarre and honest approach to his version of the blues. So, stop being so cynical and give it a blast.

I was going to mention Clapton's christening of the Les Paul, Marshall setup, but others have beaten me to it. I liken it's impact to what happened to harp playing when Little Walter and other's deciding to blow through the PA or an early guitar amp. They REDEFINED the sound of the instrument.
So all I'll add is the rhetorical question...can you imagine being a teenage Brit, having been reared on the sounds of the Beatles, Jerry and the Pacemakers, or even the Dave Clark Five, wandering into a London club because someone had recommended the Bluesbreakers, and hearing THIS STUFF? Probably as epiphanic as being a white guy in mid 50's Chicago and having the nerve to wander into the Dew Drop Inn and hearing Muddy, Wolf, or later, Otis ... Read More:

Have I missed something here in this assortment of music tracks?
The styles are all over the place and together in this order not many of these tracks flow at all! I prefer these compilations to stick to a certain time line or theme. I don't know what 'my songs' is on about, but to put current chart music with ones that are at least 18 years of age, ie, fluffy clouds - I don't get it! This should have been a single CD compilation without the incompatible extras. 3 stars as there are a few fab British artists with super songs in it!

I had dismissed Amy Winehouse as a silly young woman with tattoos and a beehive hairstyle, always in the press for the wrong reasons. Then I heard the song Rehab, and my jaw dropped when I found out who was singing. At once I realised what the fuss was about. What an extraordinary voice. I would never have guessed that a girl from North London had a vocal talent that wouldn't have been out of place in 1960s Memphis.
On this album, Winehouse's voice soars over arrangements which are a throwback to Motown's glory days, and her lyrics are biting and witty. The whole package comes to a peak on the title track.
I suspect some will compare this to Alanis Morrissette's Jagged Little Pill. I beg to differ. That cacophonous whine is very tough to ... Read More:

As someone who was barely satisfied with what could be The Beautiful South's last ever studio album, 'Superbi', I am more than pleased that Paul Heaton's second solo album is a far more raucous and memorable affair than many of the recent Beautiful South efforts. This is an album which, unlike 'Superbi', you will want to replay again and again. It has life, warmth, caustic wit and humour. It also has plenty of great memorable tunes (the single 'Mermaids And Slaves' is certainly as good as, if not better than, anything The Beautiful South have released this decade) and is packed full of brilliant lyrics which deal, often cynically and near-brutally, with the modern world and its often less than consistent inhabitants;

There's something enormously powerful here: this woman's voice, the spare arrangements, the apparently simple yet complex songs. I'm not sure what it is, but I'm smitten. She's capable of an emotional depth I've heard nowhere else, from any artist, from any other music. She did it with 'Real Life' and she does it again here on 'To Survive'. And I was ready to be disappointed when I bought this album. It overwhelms me.

I must admit that I've not submitted a review - up to now. I felt I must, after reading some of the previous reviews for this album. I first heard this album, pre-release, at the Hot Topic store in the Houston Galleria. All I recall thinking is "make a note and BUT THIS ALBUM!" I only heard the first 3 tracks, but decided to buy it anyway as soon as it was released. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED! This is a fantastic album. Each song IS INDIVIDUAL in my opinion and there's not one that I don't like. There are always going to be stand-out tracks on good albums, but that's not to say the other tracks aren't good. I think that EVERY track on this album is great. My personal favourites are "Deceiver" and "Indestructible", which are very catchy, but I never get sick of them. It's difficult to choose favourites, the guitar ... Read More:

After the impact of their brilliant debut album, the Kings' follow-up album was eagerly anticipated. And they delivered BIG time!
Aha Shake Heartbreak (though an odd name for an album) simply solidifies the thoughts among many (myself included) that the KOL are the best rock band to have come out of America for a long, long time.
It is chock-full of lively, driving numbers, awash with Caleb's Southern, twangy drawl, Nathan's snappy and precise drumming (check out "Velvet Snow") and Matthew and Jared's solid bass-lines and catchy riffing.
Top tracks include "Slow Night, So Long", "The Bucket", "Velvet Snow" and "Taper Jean Girl". "Milk" is a bit of an odd song as it's hard to understand what the opening lyrics are about, but it does build up well and is a good contrast to the others. ... Read More:

I had never heard of these but my boyfriend put this onto my ipod. I just could not stop laughing. "Can someone please remove these cutleries from my knees?" I laughed out loud on the tube.
