Glancing through the list of tracks, I thought this album would be performed in the traditional style; using choirs backed by classical instruments. However, it is just a compilation of gaudy modern performances in which american-sounding vocals have butchered some beautiful old classics. Steer clear.

Penderecki's Second and Fourth symphonies caused some level of shock among devotees of his avant-garde style when they were composed - the shock being that they don't sound half as avant-garde as they were expecting! This is either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your perspective - however, what cannot be argued over is the quality of both the performances and recordings on this Naxos release. A powerful orchestral sound, coupled with exciting conducting by the ever-excellent Antoni Wit, make this giveaway-priced disc an ideal way to sample something a little off-the-beaten-track (although be warned - not all of Penderecki's work is as accessible!)

If this was a football match then the score would probably be 4-2 to MercyMe vs. traditional Christmas songs.
By that I mean some don't work, but most are great reworkings, very true to the MercyMe sound. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is a standout with great orchestration and choir - and no, there is nothing church-like or reverent about either.
I can't imagine anyone buying this who has not already got at least one MercyMe CD so the sound will be familiar, but it is a bit of a shock to hear it applied to such well known and well worn classics as Silent Night.
But it works. This is first and foremost a MercyMe album; it just happens that the tunes are Christmas themed.
