Once again EMI has dug deep into its archive and plucked out 21 silly Christmas tracks which were almost certainly regularly played on BBC Radio's "Childrens' Favourites" in the 1950s and 60s, and "Junior Choice" in the early 70s.
Actually this release is a "revised repeat" of a CD bearing the same title from 1992; eleven of the tracks are repeated, and among the ten to be added (at the expense of the likes of Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole etc) are two each from Pinky & Perky, The Chipmunks, and Rolf Harris (but not "Seven White Boomers").
So this is a collection that is both juvenile and obscure. Depending upon taste the best numbers are from Alma Cogan, and her 50s rival Eve Boswell, from Freddie "Parrot Face" Davies ... Read More:

As befits anything given the nod of approval by legendary Pope of Trash John Waters, and as anyone who owns some of his movie soundtracks will expect, this collection is suitably bizarre, bewildering and at times outrageous - and therefore the perfect antidote to traditional Xmas collections (begone, Slade and Wizzard!) All the tracks have a certain mad charm, from inspired covers of classics such as Tiny Tim's Antony-and-the-Johnsons-esque Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Alvin and the Chipmunks' annoying Sleigh Ride, to bizarre original ditties such as the Santa-abusing Xmas-hating Here Comes Fatty Claus and the funky I Wish You a Merry Christmas (from the original artist behind the Locomotion, no less!). Two favourites stood ... Read More:

Having heard all of these shows previously on the radio & having just bought the cd version to play in the car. I can only say that if you really want to celebrate this is the way to do it.
Although the plots are somewhat dated the pathos that runs through the shows remains relevant today. Truely masterful performances by Hancock, James, Williams ably supported by Jacques & Kerr.
Sit back, enjoy and maybe cry a little - with laughter of course.

There are a lot worse albums around than this easy-going collection of country & western versions of favourite Christmas songs.
Opening with Trisha Yearwood's silky-smooth version of "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting...)" it does lull anyone for whom C&W is not their favourite cup of meat into a false sense of security. Even Loretta Lynn does second cut, "White Christmas", no harm, and Lee Greenwood's "Let It Snow..." is as straight as a bean pole. Reba McEntire's twangy soprano on track four is where the serious stuff starts, and it doesn't look back from there on, with plenty of steel guitars and thick Nashville accents following.
The likes of Yearwood, McEntire and Greenwood have two tracks each, as do Barbara Mandrell, ... Read More:

What a let down! I bought this for Nessum Dorma and found that the cupboard of his repertoire is actually pretty bare. Other than "Just one Cornetto" there aren't any big hits on this album. Surely they could have included the 1975 classic "everyone's a fruit and nut case"? More importantly, none of it is in english so i've no idea what he's on about.
That said, this guy can sing, proving, like Michelle McManus before him that being obese is no barrier if you have a decent voice. With the right material this guy could have a big career ahead of him. Maybe he should enter X-Factor, Simon Cowell could make him a big star.

Best Christmas album ever this replaces a tape. Although on the CD I've just bought through Amazon Jon Bon Jovi isn't a Back Door Santa, he wishes every day was Christmas!
Reprise, released in November 2002, is Russell Watson's third album and probably represents a more confident and self assured release than his previous `The Voice' and `Encore', thanks to his increasingly successful concert touring and life in the limelight.
But it was also a worrying time during which he suffered a throat polyp, threatening to end his singing career, which was thankfully removed without causing long term problems to his voice.
The songs are a mix of classical, opera and popular, with a distinctly more dramatic feel to those opera choices, the best example being the version of `Granada' which takes on epic proportions with the orchestral score and an individual vocal interpretation which, while straying from ...
