This album is pure gold. Some people might think it is for people who don't like Leonard Cohen's voice but who nonetheless recognise his skill as a song-writer. Personally, I think he is great and I think this album is great so it need not be one or the other - Leonard Cohen fans can like this album too, as it is full of sensitive but different interpretations of his songs. My favourite track is probably Avalanche IV sung by Jean-Louis Murat in French, which is quite brilliant. I agree with other reviewers that the Nick Cave version of Tower of Song does not add much, though Nick Cave fans might still enjoy it and there is another better version of the song on the album too. The House of Love version of Who By Fire is not as bad as other reviewers ... Read More:

From the opening chug of Beetlebum to the final weirdness of Essex Dogs this is the most accomplished blur album of all time making it possibly the best album ever committed to tape.
Sounds hinted at in the Great Escape (He Thought Of Cars, Globe Alone) are brought to the fore, and some of the craziness of Seymour (Blurs incarnation, know for there mental art rock) is mixed with some of the best song writing ever, with Grahams Your So Great pointing towards the awesome Sky Is Too High.
After this Blur had no rules, and could create anything... and did with the less focused 13

First point - if you are a Radiohead fan you will probably go out and buy this album irrespective of the critical reception it receives. Curiosity alone will tempt most, particularly considering that Thom is seen as such an enigma.
Is the music on 'The Eraser' worth investigating in its own right? Well yes, but I do have some reservations about this release. There are some good songs (Analyse, Atoms, And it rained...) but this album is crying out for some shifts in mood and tempo. Idioteque from Kid A sounded fresh and unique but you never get that feeling from anything here. It is very much as you would expect - Thom singing over a minimal electronic backing coupled with a trademark Nigel Godrich production job.

This CD stands alone as an original creative piece with a touching mood all of its own. In context, as their first album (subsequently followed by "The Bairns"), it illustrates the beginnings of their unique sound which famously combines authenticity and individuality. If you're new to Rachel Unthank and the Winterset, start with "The Bairns", their second and most recent offering (simply breathtaking), and then treat yourself to "Cruel Sister" because you will want more, and this will help put their journey in context.

Hey its a great disc I bought the lot and them I play the pick of the three as my best of the best! See all the other reviews for more information I'd only be repeating it!
It seems they could be too busy to record a fourth, though I am hoping it will be a DVD of one of their concerts live which is awesome!

I think some of the less favourable reviews have missed the point somewhat. I can't believe anyone bought this album having heard the singles and actually expected something serious, but there you go. Takes all sorts I spose.
Like The Mighty Boosh, Calvin Harris somehow manages to pull off the difficult trick of being very silly and very cool at the same time. That's what you're getting here, nothing more and nothing less. Dance snobs had best look elsewhere.

okay i was two years short from hitting my teens upon its 1996 release but 1977 by ASH was the album that more or less reflected my growing up in some way's and this re-issue is a slight premature considering they have only released 5 albums into their lifetime and are now focusing on just releasing singles but i suppose it does not hurt the album any further since this 3cd collection gathers all the three pieces best hits and rarities to make a great album even greater.
Disc 2 and 3 are purely for the borderline - obsessive as disc 1 when it was first released 12 years ago is the real deal tracks like "Oh Yeah" has a slow start that veers into a climatic build up of Wheeler's vocals as if he was describing whats life like as a teenager connecting with those finding growing up ...
