I dont think this album lives up to it's title, there are many albums that are better, live, and more exciting to listen to. It may be good value for money, but the songs are badly arranged and a bit predictable. Buy london community gospel choir, or Mark Beswick & The Power Praise Worship Band , for a real live gospel experience.

I bought this after hearing the uplifting track "Rock Me" on the second Jools Holland Friends album.
It is hard to find words to describe just how good this album is - I would never have envisaged buying a gospel album before, but this is simply awesome music.
Also recommend "higher Ground" which has a totally different feel to it, but with the same quality shining through.

Excellent CD. The old traditional hymns really hit home. Definitely worth listening to such inspiring music. It is unfortunate that the old time hymns have been forgotten, and so this recording by Johnny Cash reminds one that there was once good Christian oriented music. By contrast, the new contemporary Christian music panders to modern "pop culture" and sounds is if it was sung by some washed up Vegas lounge lizard.

After seeing Randolph and the Family Band on the last night of Clapton's tour in the Royal Albert Hall I had to buy this CD to see if the studio versions were as good as the live ones. Never the same but certainly not disappointed, this is a great album. An ecclectic mix of gospel, blues, funk, soul, jazz and the kitchen sink thrown in for good measure. Is he the next Hendrix? Well, boy can this guy play, I mean really play. The vocals and lyrics are strong and his cousin's voice (the bass player) sounds like it should come from a beehived 1960's female singer, not a huge 6ft plus man; tuneful, soulful and sounding perfect for the riffs and bass lines drifting past your ears. My 15 year old son thinks this is great also, not many bands can bridge ... Read More:

Some of the songs in this massive collection make you shake your head with wonder - surely this one can't have been released as a record for people to buy in a record shop? Imagine the conversation from 1929 - "Excuse me, have you got I Wish I Was a Mole in the Ground, by Bascom Lamar Lunsford?" "Why certainly young sir, it's right here, that'll be 30 cents!" But apparently ALL of these songs, ballads, fiddle tunes, gospel shouts, shape-note choirs, blues, string bands, cajuns and hot sermonising were indeed issued on 78s, and the public did buy them. Well - the rural folk in the Southern states, not those sophisticates in New York. A guy called Ralph Peer found out by accident that white people down in the South would buy records by Uncle Bunt Stephens ... Read More:

This is in my opinion the best album Kirk Franklin has done yet. I enjoy every track and now my husband wants to fight me for it!

This album is grimey!!! Shackles is a great-get-down tune! Thankful, the first tune is grimey too and makes u think. I also like What A Friend, Joy, I Just Can't Give Up Now (is that what it's called?!).....in fact all the tunes are great. Whether Christian or not it's great and up lifting. Warryn Campbell, you're a grimey producer!!! Hey young peeps, get this you'll love it, especially the r'n'b crowd!!
