I first found out about Within Temptation when they joined Road Runner Records and after purchasing The Silent Force i thought id investigate some of the older albums. With the Silent Force it was a little heavier then this album which is ok cause this way it showed that they just kept evolving with the present day music BUT if you want to hear Within Temptation on a mellow-level lower and smoother then their current albums "The Silent Force" + "The Heart Of Everything" then it would be worth checking out how Within Temptation sounded a long time back. My favourite song on here would have to be Mother Earth cause it was soooo smoothing and relaxing for me and to almost here a story about mother nature through a song is a rare thing in music ... It's a shame in a way that nowadays this album seems to fit in with a vast amount of similarly aggressive and agonising music. On it's release it was the first of it's kind and to describe its impact as harrowing would be a serious understatement.
Seminal it undoubtably was but where other bands strive to achieve the same effect they fail because 'Pornography' is so sincere. Only Nirvana reached the level of outright desperation that brutally stabs out of this recording. But cacophony in itself is not enough. These are really great songs produced by a man who was driving himself way too hard.
In amongst the relentlessly attacking sound, evidence of a great songwriter emerges in moments of astonishing beauty. This is ... Read More:

opeths ninth album is certainly more of the same but thats a good thing and they bring a better selection of tracks than on their previous album, ghost reveries,a controversial statement perhaps but this album flows better and has a better all round feel to it.
Anyway, the album opens up with 'coil' and is a mournful yet beautiful ballad that features mikael along with a female singer as they trade verses in what is certainly a haunting opener, perhaps it shouldnt work in terms of being an albums opener but it certainly does.
The next song could rank as one of the heaviest of their 18 year career,'heir apparent' features a vulgar riff and some of their most conventional drumming, more in line with metals take perhaps!
That is two tracks ... Read More:

A fairly preposterous proposition at the best of times, Bauhaus occasionally came up with a killer art-rock tune - but boy did you have to sit through some pretentious guff to get to it.
Their most famous song remains 'Bela Lugosi's Dead.' Extraordinarily long for a single released in 1979, it still exudes a clammy dread. Pete Murphy's ghoulish, disembodied voice is perfectly suited to the hammy tale of bats and belltowers, vampires and virgins.
'She's In Parties' is a fine single, for once the strangulated guitar enhancing the song not detracting from it. 'Kick In The Eye' is loose, funky, danceable. The urgent, dramatic 'The Passion Of Lovers' is another top track, as is the excellently titled 'Terror Couple Kill Colonel.' And the band's ... Read More:

As a long time fan of Siouxsie (albeit sporadic) I recently heard a couple of tracks from this album and thought it would be worth a punt. Good decision - Siouxsie is a class act and this album delivers at all levels. Stand out tracks for me are "Sea Of Tranquility" which showcases her voice and song-writing ability superbly and "About To Happen" which could be by any of the upcoming wannabes - it sounds so up to date that you wouldn't think it was being delivered by someone who has been around this long. No resting on her laurels here then - nice one Siouxsie - where to next - can't wait.

Somewhere along the line AAE got labelled as goth, probably due to black eyeliner and clothes, however their debut album owes more to folk traditions than any other genre. Singer Julianne Regan's voice is never better than on their first album, whether soft and breathy on their cover of the traditional ballad 'She moves through the fair', or demonstrating power on 'Wild hearted woman'. Maybe it was the blend of softening mainstream rock with folky acoustic guitars that never got them into the top 30 after 'Martha's harbour' as grunge started to infiltrate from the US in the late 80s, but I'll always revisit this album with pleasure.

people always rate this as their favoirite cure album. it could be described as ' the cure do new romantic' but they do it better than all of their comtemporaries (Maybe not Adam Ant). but it is let down by mediocre tracks that dont have a great deal of meaning behind them and even less emotion. It is the cure, but it is almost like a singles collection really. Push and Six Different Ways are just pop ditties. The only song with any depth is really 'sinking' and its hardly depth.
That said - I ADORE this album. As a pop album it is perfect! As a cure album ... it seems to be lacking something.

This album is a great follow-on from Sing the Sorrow, I would say it is more varied and it's packed with instant classics (e.g. Miss Murder).
I loved the album from start to finish. The last track (Head Like a Hole) really reminds me of a track by Nine Inch Nails, although I can't remember the name.
