The Monkees were two folk singers and two actors pulled together to from a Beatles-lite pop group for mop top hungry American teenagers. Whilst the real fab four were dabbling with drugs, facial hair and musical experimentation, the Monkees offered easy on the ear tunes and whacky 'comedy'. They were derided at the time by serious muscians and the critics ripped into them on a weekly basis.
But time has been kind to the bands musical legacy and, with song writers such as Carole King and Neil Diamond on board, the Monkees are now seen as pioneers. The original manufactured boy band but with added great songs.
'I'm A Believer', 'Pleasant Valley Sunday', 'Last Train to Clarkesville' and the perenial 'Daydream Believer' have stood the ... Read More:

Unfortunately, Simple Minds tend to be remembered mainly for a couple of hits, Don't You & Alive & Kicking which kind of misses the (their) point.
Simple Minds came along at the same time as U2 &, for my money at least, were the more "cutting edge" of the two.....up until 1983, New Gold Dream at least.
This collection has the early stuff in abundance, The American, Theme For Great Cities, I Travel yet the absence of New Gold Dream is mystifying.
They made BIG music; pumping, driving, futuristic, Euro-synth dance music & they made it well.
Waterfront virtually confirms the assertion of the time that they were almost too big for stadia yet also proved to be just past the pinnacle of ... Read More:

It isn't difficult to see why bands like Nirvana were so influenced by The Pixies.Songs based around a big thick bass sound with wailing, thrashing six strings crashing in with the chorus.Coupled with the high-pitched,screeching vocals of Charles Thompson, it all created a quite stunning effect.
If you are unfamiliar with or missed this wonderful Massachusett four piece during their brief six year career then this is the best place to start.
The Pixies musical styles are many and varied and this disc captures the very best of their songs from their four albums 'Surfa Rosa','Doolittle','Bossanova','Trompe Le Monde' and the mini-album 'Come On Pilgrim'.
The manic,frenzied assault of 'Broken Face',the chugging,menacing 'Bone Machine',the ... Read More:

Well, here we are again, happy as can be..... well, not quite as it happens.
For the umpteenth time since 1984, we witness the arrival of yet another Japan compilation, or should we say the best of their Virgin Records years. Quite simply, this compilation takes us, in recording terms, from late-1979 to late-1981. It almost completely ignores the band's Hansa material from 1977-1979, including classic cuts from their two 1978 albums such as the reggae-infused Rhodesia, the post-punk sounding Communist China, the moody pop of Adolescent Sex, the edgy Stateline and the epic Suburban Berlin. Sure, their earlier years were patchy, but there were some masterful highlights which have been purposely ignored here.

One of the best compilations I've ever hearded; all of the songs are very known, and all of them are ORIGINAL HITS, restored from the analog recordings; great classic compositions like DREAMS, GO ON YOUR OWN WAY, LITTLE LIES, great ballads like AS LONG AS YOU FOLLOW, OH DIANE!, SARA, great rock like TUSK, DON'T STOP and BIG LOVE; the first time I hearded this disc, I decided that I had to buy it!!!; when you hear this disc, you will play it one and one and THOUSAND times!!!

I must admit, I'm not exactly a fan or Tom Jones, but my sister already has this album and when I listened to it I just had to buy it. The man has an awesome voice and every track on this album is totally different. A good one to add to your collection!

There is nothing I can add to what has been said before.
I will admit that while I listened to radio 2 in the 70's-thanks mum & dad!- before I moved towards Joy Division & The Banshees I listened to your choice of music and I am extremely grateful for it.
"Daylight Katy" and "Sundown" are songs that stick with me now in middle-age as when I was young.
Bob Dylan was an icon for a generation but Mr Lightfoot caught my imagination when I was a nipper-listen to "If You Could Read My Mind" and tell me that Dylan wrote anything better and I would beg to differ....

The Very Best Of Rainbow covers the whole spectrum of the group between 1975 - 1983 on one disk. It kicks of with 7 tracks fron the Ronnie James Dio period between the 3 albums, Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Rainbow Rising & Long Live Rock 'N' Roll. Ronnie James Dio leaves for Black Sabbath and he his replaced by Graham Bonnet only on one album Down To Earth, 2 tracks are lifted from the album, he is then replaced by Joe Lynn Turner who covers the last 3 Rainbow albums Difficult To Cure, Straight Between The Eyes and Bent Out Of Shape, 7 tracks are drawn between the last three. Overall the Dio period is the best, there are some OK highlights from the post Dio period hence the 4 stars. Dont be put of by that its worth purchasing just for the Dio period and the excellent liner ... Read More:
