...this is one of the most beautiul albums ever!...melodic vocals acompany by heavy, tribal druming, and combine with glass-shattering guittar riffs which are the backbone to the background music of the tales of serial killers (Pretty Polly) and weird Japanese monsters (Maraykin)...how can you not love this!?...

Invariably band's first albums give you a better insight into their souls than later works, which become infected by producers and other influences. This is the stuff Bush worked on before their recording contract, honed on the road and full of optimism and hope as they take it into the recording studio. Everything Zen is absolutly spot on. Okay, so I love the Hunky Dory reference to "Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow" but who cares?

This is the stuff they thought was their best - lets get it down while we can. The rest can wait. Glycerine - almost any three sylable line will do to make this work. The first four songs are live and were originally released on the EP Live Like a Suicide. There are two cover songs here, Nice Boys and Mama Kin, (by Rose Tattoo and Aerosmith respectively) both are superb and Mama Kin would regularly appear on the live set.
Reckless Life and Move to the City are by the Guns, the latter still being on the set occasionally during the Use Your Illusion Tour.

The next four songs are dramatically different with a slower acoustic feel.
Patience is the first and best of these, perhaps one of the best ballads ever written, this song is truly beautiful.
You're Crazy appears as it was before they speeded it up for Appetite for Destruction.

Let's be honest...this is never a "great" album. It's ok, and there is no shortage of hooks, but the lyrics are so bad they really put you off. Come on - "She's personal property", "make love like a man, i'm a man" - for christ's sake. At least AC/DC can do misogny/lewdness with humour or tongue in cheek as well as better tunes. That said there are a couple of good tracks on here - White Lighting, Tonight, Tear it Down. Worth a listen but please, it's not a great album.

Fire Garden

Fire Garden was Steve Vai's proper follow up to his classic "Passion and "Warfare" and probably not quite as good overall. It does however represent significant growth for him as a musician and composer. And it's got "Crying Machine" on it (more on that later), which makes it indisposable.
The album kicks off with a series of crashes and a siren going off warning appropriately enough that "There's a fire in the house" (track 1), and that there's some smouldering lead work to come.

From their formation in the mid-late seventies to the modern day, Def Leppard has been one of the most consistent rock bands out there. From their days as part of the NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) to their days as a classic hard rock band in the eighties to their modern days as a pop-rock band, they rarely fail to please. It took them long enough, but at long last we have a Def Leppard greatest hits compilation. How does it measure up? Read on for my review of Vault.

Kiss are a great band. I never really like their old studio recordings but this live cd is one of the best rock cds i own! Full of good riffs, guitar solos and interaction with the audience, this is always exciting to listen to. Essential to a rock fan.

Foreigner 4: Expanded Edition

Slight problem with this record. It contains one of the most famous ballads in the history of rock, the mega selling hit single Waiting for a Girl Like You, which tends to overshadow the rest of the material, which is a shame.

The band did not do themselves any favours by toping Waiting for... with an even bigger selling power ballad in their next record, the equally huge I Want To Know What Love Is.

These two songs branded Foreigner as a ballads band, when in the fact of the matter was that they were rockers, albeit with a softer edge.

4 kicks off with two great anthemic tracks, Night Life, a concert opener if I ever heard one, and the time changing Jukebox Hero.
