Wolfmother

Take a large measure of Led Zeppelin, a tablespoon of Hendrix, a teaspoon of Black Sabbath and a pinch of White Stripes and you have Wolfmother. Maybe not terribly original but the nods are respectful. One of the best albums I've heard in a long time. Play loud while wearing velvet loons and lennon glasses.

Live After Death

This has got to be one of THE all-time greatest live albums...from start to finish it doesn't let up in its barrage of awesome songs and Bruce Dickinson playing the crowd like never before...add to it that immortal line, and you've got yourself Maiden at their very best, which is saying something! (As an aside, my title comes from the fact that Bruce is a registered pilot...how cool would it be to hear that if you were flying!)

Exile on Main Street

I like the Stones and I love raw blues and R&B but I somehow missed out on "Exile on Main Street". So, enthused by such great reviews, I was expecting something special... an earthy, pseudo-live album that, despite its origins in drug addled chaos, would grab my attention and be worth the effort of repeat listening while, on the way, delivering up some classic gems. Well I tried, but what I kept getting was a voice saying "look, matey, you could spend hours trying to get into this but the truth is it ain't that good".

Maybe, like Neil Young's "Tonight's the Night" - whose origins and chaotic structure are similar but which still grabs valued space in my music collection - you had to buy it at the time and then listen to it for many ... Read More:

Ballbreaker

After many years, I picked up 'Ballbreaker' again and for the last week it's been a fixture in my car CD player. Back in 95, I had dismissed it as yet more disappointing material from the band that had ignited my long affair with heavy rock. This album is very good and a throwback in many respects to the 70s.

My favourite tracks are 'The Furor', 'Hail Caesar' and 'Caught with your pants down'. Brian Johnson, for the first time since 'Back in Black' produces something worth listening to. I'm not at all surprised that Rick Rubin produced the album, the man litters gold dust in his wake.The guitar breaks are meaningful, and the rhythm and direction of the songs have definetely been nurtured in a successful attempt at a good rock album.

Queen

This debut album by Queen has never been a critic's favourite, but its not bad. The production sounds a bit cloudy and dated, but there are some classic tracks on here, namely Keep Yourself Alive, Great King Rat, My Fairy King (best track on here by a country mile) and Liar. The rest of the tracks are OK - no particular stinkers - but Queen truly found their niche on the 3rd album, Sheer Heart Attack.

This is quo at its best - tracks like backwater and just take me out rival punk and quite frankly many modern bands. The remastering is excellent - rossi and coughlan up in the mix. 5/5

I wish I could start by giving this album more stars. As far as a Jimi Hendrix 'best of' goes, you can't do much better than this. One disc of his best known tracks and another of live and rarer music. The two sides to Jimi's music, the polished, yet still powerfully raw studio work and the soaring, imaginative and soul lifting live work. Hendrix was innovative and unique in his time and listening to his music you are struck again and again by the fact that he is still unsurpassed. His sound has been emulated (often poorly) but never bettered. 'All along the watchtower' and 'Voodoo Chile' start with full force and slap you in the face, where tracks like 'Angel' and 'Little Wing' lull you into his psychedelic, magical patchwork. Don't take drugs. Let Hawkwind take them for you. This was definitely the turning point. Riffs, chants, sounds, Space lyrics and in the middle of it all is the madness of 'Adjust Me'. Including the fan fave 'Master of the Universe' plus bonus single 'Silver Machine' and B-side '7 by 7' this could be all you need to begin your Hawkwind journey. Originally released in 1971, the Hawkwind had risen from the underground and were claiming ground on the surface. Fantastic!

Amon Amarth - a band that never seems to disappoint. TOTTG is another fantastic metal album from those crazy vikings. I doubt this band will ever disappoint their fans, you know exactly what to expect when buying an Amon Amarth record - straight up metal that makes you headbang like a madman.

The opening track is superb and contains fantastic melodies and build ups - one of their best songs however slightly different from With Oden...That sums up the entire album actually, Fate of Norns was a very melodic album, and it did have songs like Ancient Sign and Pursuit that were standout tracks, but the majority of songs were melodic and rather different from Vs the World and their earlier works. The Heart of Everything

I only recently got into WT after seeing them support Iron Maiden at Twickenham and this was the first album I bought. It is quite simply brilliant. Comparisoms with Evenescence are unwarrented as WT are in a different league. This album is an excellent place to start but the earlier ones are brilliant as well (especially Mother Earth). the music also transcends the generations as all my 3 teenage boys have become WT fans as well has many of their freinds at school. Buy this album if you have any interest in melodic rock - you won't be disappointed.
