One of THE great old school thrash albums from 1986 - alongside Master Of Puppets and Peace Sells.
30 minutes of violent, tight music with no room for instrumentals or ballads - not even an acoustic intro! Just razor sharp riffs, solos that border on painful in a good way, and thundering drums (great double bass and a fantastic snare sound). Admittedly, the bass guitar isn't high in the mix.
Vocals are VERY aggressive while remaining Clean - every word is legible even without the available lyric sheet.
Lyrics are extreme, Nazis, Serial Killers, Devil Worship but what else can fit this??!!
A perfect production, probably Slayer's best, and a disturbing Cover Art to boot!
ESSENTIAL FOR ALL METAL FANS.

Honest to God I have heard so many people bitch about this album because it just isn't Nightwish..........

If you dont like it, listen to something else. In My personall opinion Nightwish have got quite a lot heavier (probably due to Marco Hietala) and this I think makes them better. Some of the songs have a slightly poppy, filler, sort of feel but many of them are awesome

Bye Bye Beautiful, incredible display of Marco's singing power and how well he and Anette work together.

7 Days to the Wolves another great song

Master Passion Greed - granted a little heavy for many of nightwish's following but if you like metal...you'll love it

This album appears to many as a covers album, using none of their own material. This is definately not the case. The reason for this album was celebrating and applauding influences and good friends of the band (Cypress Hill in particular), by re-recording their hits. I use the word 're-recording' because the 'covers' of the songs are completely reworked to fit the mould of the Rage style we all know and love. People who simply dismiss this album really haven't listened to it properly. It may not be the same without Zack's phenomenal and awe-inspiring lyrics, but it is still a masterpiece. The Very Best Of Rainbow covers the whole spectrum of the group between 1975 - 1983 on one disk. It kicks of with 7 tracks fron the Ronnie James Dio period between the 3 albums, Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Rainbow Rising & Long Live Rock 'N' Roll. Ronnie James Dio leaves for Black Sabbath and he his replaced by Graham Bonnet only on one album Down To Earth, 2 tracks are lifted from the album, he is then replaced by Joe Lynn Turner who covers the last 3 Rainbow albums Difficult To Cure, Straight Between The Eyes and Bent Out Of Shape, 7 tracks are drawn between the last three. In terms of production, arrangement and structure this is a most impressive album. The most impressive part for me is Kahn's absolutely amazing singing voice. He is not a traditional metal singer, he sounds almost like a Broadway musical singer, an excellent one too, and his words are very clear.

The style of the music is very flamboyant and emotional. The musicianship is absolutely top-notch and combined with the vocals has some real goosebump moments.

The album kicks off with a 'Prologue' which is an instrumental with strange vocal noises and a ticking Grandfather clock. The Magician's Birthday

This album has always been underrated. The album peaked at 28 in the uk and 31 in Billboard. It has a fine balance between rock and soft rock. This is due to Ken Hensley who is responsible for most songs. The song Rain is an example of a fine tune. It is also heard on his solo album Proud words on a dusty shelf (1973). Ken is still recording great albums. When i first finished listening the songs i said WOW..this is great. I played the album at least a hundred times.
Spider woman could have been a hit single but in my view but they released sweet Lorraine and that was no sucess. Blind eye is my favorite song. It is a dark song with great lyrics. Long Cold Winter

To call this band another Hair Metal band is wrong. They are far more talented than a lot of the rubbish cheesy bands which came out at the same time. I loved this band in the late 80's and early 90's, sadly never saw them live. This has some of the best Hard Rock songs on here every, it is worth buying alone for "Long Cold Winter" which is an amazing track, and who cannot like "Gypsy Road". The singer has a weird voice which does take some getting used to but stick with them, good stuff.

I keep going back to this disc , I still think it is their most underrated album. It has that 'feel' to it that separates a great album from a collection of songs. Try it and give your brain a thrill!
