A Final Hit: Greatest Hits

CD-Charts > Music > House and Garage
by: Leftfield

Release Date October 03, 2005
Some five years after their discreet, barely noticed split, Leftfield eschew the usual glory with a superfluous compilation. Whilst offering abundant value (a DVD of all their promos accompanies it), "A Final Hit" is neither necessary, nor definitive.

Leftfield never really had the kind of personality that distinguished them from their peers, producing excellent, but somewhat characterless music : it's no surprise that by far their biggest hit was helmed by Johnny Rotten, a man with enough personality to fill a stadium by himself.

In fact, "A Final Hit" sounds more like a compilation of vocalists remixed by the same people, and whilst it is bursting with some classics - "Open Up", "Release The Pressure", "Phat Planet" ... Read More:

Quadrastate

CD-Charts > Music > House and Garage
by: 808 State

Release Date May 26, 2008
...contains a piece of dance music history in "Pacific State".

Originally more of a 12" EP than an LP, this Richard D James-sanctioned Rephlex re-issue, never before available on CD, expands the original "Quadrastate" into a 66 minute album with the inclusion of all the tracks from the "Deepville/Let Yourself Go" 12" single plus 4 previously unreleased tunes.

"Pacific State" is a legend in its own right - cited by Jeff Mills in the sleevenotes of his Azuli Records "Choice" compilation as the inspiration for Underground Resistance's "World 2 World". There aren't many white techno artists that can be said to have influenced black ones - that's a measure of just how influential 808 State were. Owners of "90" take note: this ... Read More:

Global Underground 22: Dave Seaman In Melbourne

CD-Charts > Music > House and Garage
by: Dave Seaman, Dave Seaman (Mixed By)

Release Date April 29, 2002
It could be forgiven to think that a Dave Seaman CD would not only be touching the boundaries of progressive house and trance, but positively delving straight into them. This Global Underground release moves the series onwards and upwards with perhaps the most varied one to date. Tracks that wouldn't be out of place on his contribution to the excellent Back to Mine series start this whole mix off, then tunes as epic as James Holden's One 4 You and Digital Mind Control's scary Mindstate follow on nicely. Orbital's Illuminate adds a bit of techno to the end of the first CD, then the brilliant and funky Looky Thing by Slacker bring things to a close.

The second CD also has some great tracks, Consider the Ravens and Starwater being some ... Read More:

Release Date October 31, 2005
This CD came highly recommended by friends and here on amazon. I've given this a month of playing but have decided I can no longer put up with it.The hitherto unreleased tracks from Beck and Bjork would have been better remaining just that, they are both utterly depressing. Roots Manuva track is just appalling, the only glimmer of hope on the whole double Cd in my view is the Fat Freddys Drop track. The rest of the content is filler to my ears.
I have about a thousand CDs and vinyl in my collection and this for my money rates in the bottom 10 % and will never buy anything with the GP name attached. My collection goes back many years and during the oil crisis a few years back an album like this would have been seen as a waste of the worlds finite ... Way Out West

CD-Charts > Music > House and Garage
by: Way Out West

Release Date August 30, 1997
Way Out West's first album, from 1997, is stunning.

For their second and third albums they moved more towards using vocals, but on this album with the exception of a big Joanna Law sample on "The Gift", this is mainly an instrumental album, and proof that an instrumental album can keep you listening over and over without ever getting bored.

You get a good blend of club-friendly tracks and more home-listening-based stuff. On the club side you get the genius of "Domination" (one of the best slowly-building tracks I've ever heard), their hits "The Gift" and "Ajare", and another favourite of mine "Sequoia". If only Way Out West had been a bigger hit and more dance music had ended up sounding like this.

On the home listening ... Read More:

CD-Charts > Music > House and Garage
by: Basement Jaxx

Release Date October 20, 2003
This is the most consistent album for me, i can listen right the way through this album without having to skip any tracks as aresult of the improved consistency.

The singles which are on this album aren't as good as other basement jaxx singles such as 'rendez-vous' or 'Romeo', however, the album tracks are more impressive such as 'hot and cold' and'Right here's the spot'. The other album tracks are also cool which helps makes the album even better and means you don't have to skip any of the songs.

The singles, despite not being as good as previous ones, are still cool, just as cool as the whole album. I believe that it is not the singles that make an album, but the remaining tracks which decide whether an album is good, the album tracks give ... Read More:

I don't know how this album passed me by, I've only just picked it up in 2008 on a recommendation and I love it. Gentle atmospheric electro, all somewhere between Trentemoller, Kraftwerk, and Slam. A great home listening album.

Nude Tempo Vol.1: Mixed By Miguel Migs

by: Miguel Migs

Release Date March 18, 2002
Have to agree with the reviews on here.

I bought this album based on these reviews and because I love my house deep and soulful and have always liked Miguel Migs style (also check out disc 2 of the Southport weekender album mixed by him).

There is not a single poor track on here as you so often find with compilations. The standout tunes for me are 'The Dream' and 'Soul To Let Go' (blissfully deep tunes), 'You Bring Me Up (it doesn't get any deeper than this), 'Spiritual' (a lighter hearted jazzy tune), and my out and out favourite 'Atmospheric Beats' by Kerri Chandler (does that man ever make a bad tune?).

The last four tunes round of proceedings very nicley and like me I'm sure you'll be pressing the repeat button to enjoy it all over again. ... Read More:

S Club

CD-Charts > Music > House and Garage
by: S Club 7

Release Date October 04, 1999
Fresh from bursting onto the pop scene by way of their kids' TV series, "Miami 7", S Club 7 present us with arguably the cheesiest but one of the best debut albums of all time. Chock-full of bright, bouncy pop tracks and featuring a couple of lovely ballads too, "S Club" is a must for any pop lover.

The album kicks off with the group's irresistible first single, "Bring it all back", which zoomed straight to no. 1 in the UK. This happy pop number sets the standard and the sound for the remaining ten tracks, and I'm delighted to say that they all live up to expectations. Songs that follow this catchy pop style are "You're my number one", "S Club party", "Everybody wants ya", "Viva la fiesta" and "It's a feel good thing", the latter two also reminiscent of the Latin genre, albeit ...
