Opeth's latest offering, "Watershed" was really something of a surprise, and comes as proof that they will never let us get comfortable and settle into a predictable rut as so many talented bands do. Instead, Opeth continue to challenge their listeners with something really quite different, not only from "Ghost Reveries" but also from all their previous albums. Of course it is still unmistakably Opeth, with Akerfeldt's trademark vocals and their unique combination of blasting death metal ferocity with mellow acoustic brilliance and awesome prog solos. However they have gotten a bit more experimental on us and mixed in some touches of jazz/blues (for example in the beautiful "Burden" and the unexpected funk section at the end of "the Lotus ... Well-crafted songs, an expressive voice, wonderful harmonies, thoughtful lyrics and a lightness of touch on this beautiful collection of acoustic-based melodies. Wonderful.

If I had reviewed this after one listen, I would have given it three stars at best. However, after a couple of weeks I realised I'd played the album, in full or in part, almost every day. It had grown on me before I noticed. So, yes,the lyrics are incoherent in places & make no logical sense at all. And, no, there isn't much in the way of a tune to be had. But the noise it makes is simply gorgeous, & Cave's voice is at its best after sounding downright enfeebled on the overrated 'Abattoir/Lyre' album. I think this one will suit people who have a sneaking feeling that old Nick has got too comfy recently: those who feel he has come of age as a mature artist will be horrified. I recently read that he plans to go on till he's sixty, which came as a relief ... Read More:

'Till the Sun...' is so much more better than 'Trouble' in so many ways, I think I'd have to be a quadruped with 60 toes to count them all! (But one reason it's better is that it's offensibly, criminally dirt-cheap compared to trouble!) 'Be Here Now' almost reaches out of the darkness with its overdone horn and string arrangements, giving it a somewhat dream-like quality. The next track, 'Empty', is by far the best song on the album, with deep, emotional, bleak lyrics and a good mixture of piano, gentle percussion, strings and Ray on the guitar. 'Lay with Me' is also quite a sweet tune about breaking inhibitions, and 'Three More Days' is a funky, soulful little number. At first you'll be of mixed opinion, but I think Ray's done himself proud with this one. 'Within You' ... Read More:

The acne ridden 'rockers' return for yet more monotonous bile. Is it me, or do ALL their songs sound the same? 'Brianstorm' is possibly the most uninspiring piece of music I've heard to date. They should try something new if they are to get any respect from me. Why not try orchestras or real singalong anthems, while still keeping the 'rock' tag. If these guys seriously want to become the new Oasis, then they will have to put some imagination and emotion into their songs, rather than this... well I was going to say music, but I just can't call it that.
However, saying that, this isn't exactly their 'Morning Glory', is it?

I thoroughly enjoyed Snow Patrol's latest album "Eye's Open" ,but I didn't enjoy the band's 2004 album "Final Straw" quite so much.It wasn't quite up to the high standards of "Eyes Open". That said it is still one of the better albums that I have heard recently featuring excellent songs such as "How To Be Dead", "Spitting Games", "Chocolate" and "Run". A few other tracks on "Final Straw" are good as well but I found the final four or five songs (bonus tracks included) to be a bit of a let down;they all seemed to blur into one.

I agree with most of the other reviews that this is the best Blonde album. Although I've got a lot of the tracks already, my existing CD (The Complete Picture) is over a decade old, so I was after a brighter sound.
This remastered version certainly delivers the goods. It sound bright and sharp, without being over-engineered, a problem I found with Greatest Hits: Sight And Sound, where the band seemed to be playing seperately then put together.
