I agree with most of the other reviews that this is the best Blonde album. Although I've got a lot of the tracks already, my existing CD (The Complete Picture) is over a decade old, so I was after a brighter sound.
This remastered version certainly delivers the goods. It sound bright and sharp, without being over-engineered, a problem I found with Greatest Hits: Sight And Sound, where the band seemed to be playing seperately then put together.

............and am purchasing replacement because I couldn't live without it. Play it any time of day. If I play it after bedtime reading to my 6yr old, without a doubt, they'll be asleep before the CD finishes! This album can lift you, relax you, whatever you need, it can do it. Definately in my top 10 and I haven't changed my mind since that first Moon Safari CD purchased many years ago!

This is a totally underrated album by the magnificent Young Knives. Its classic edgy indie rock. The first half of the album is similar to stuff found on the excellent 'Voices of Animals and Men', with a polished feel. The album gets more interesting from Turn Tail onwards. Mummy Light the Fire, with its magnificent psychedelic feel, Flies and Current of the River totally change the feel and tempo of the album, hoisting it to 'classic' in my book. There is something slightly sinister about the Knives, especially when the House of Lords is singing, which I like, in particular and this feeling certainly increases towards the end of the album, when the music and lyrical delivery matches the darkness of the lyrics.
The Knives are also big on ironic social ... Read More:

I've had this for a couple of days after really looking forward to it for a while (I only heard of the Rascals after the Shadow Puppets record).
It's OK: like the Coral crossed with Arctic Monkeys but not as good as either (who are both excellent). Without going into a track-by-track description, it sounds exactly like you probably imagine it would, though it just doesn't consistently gallop along like I expected. There is a good mixture of pace, but maybe a bit much mid-tempo...
Certainly, it is not as immediate as Monkeys albums (or the Puppets one).
The sequence is strange too. I like the end of the album better than the beginning, whereas normally I tend to find the songs I like best at the beginning.
Still, I'm glad I bought it. It is well ... Read More:

I liked the vast majority of this albums songs. All Pearl Jams hits are featured. A few reason why I have not given a 5/5 star review are: The remastered songs (2 on each album). Theyre just not as good as the originals. Also the album structure I feel is not right. Instead of charting PJ's career chronologically (Grunge-Post Grunge etc), songs are placed in what appears to be random order, although the first disk is a lot heavier. Personally I would have done it chronologically, but you cant please everyone! The album cover is a little naff, the sleeves make it difficult to get CD's out of and often the CD's will fall out if your carrying the album about, what was wrong with a hard case?!
Still a great album, although if you have the songs on their original ... Read More:

The Futureheads were energetic and infectious in their first album. Their second... not so much. It was more serious and downbeat, and just not as endearing.
So honestly I had no idea what "This is Not The World" would sound like, and whether they would return to Album No. 1's sound, or stick to their guns now that they have their own label. Well, the Futureheads don't take us anywhere new, but their raucously energetic third album strikes a solid balance between their two sounds, with perhaps a greater reliance on their older wildness.
It kicks off with a whirling riff and solid drums, morphing into a driving, tightly-wound post-punk powerpop number. "It's time to wake up/It's time to change," Barry Hyde calls out over the energetic music. "Let's get it ... Read More:

This is an incredible album right from the cover. A magenta double exposed, out of focus guitar. It sums up the conflict between noise and beauty that is central to the album and makes it so thrilling. I think the comparisons with Sonic Youth are misleading. The noise that Sonic Youth produce, eventually leads nowhere on many of their albums. Their best album Daydream Nation, great though it is, does not have the adventure or beauty of Loveless. Alongside OK Computer, this is arguably the best album of the 1990s and possibly the last 25 years.

A very fresh-sounding, spunky bit of folk rock, if ever I've heard one.
Ignore the magazine reviews that make comparisons with Nick Drake; to my ears, this doesn't sound a bit like any of Nick Drake's albums -- that's just what burned-out music journos say when they get an acoustic record and they don't have the imagination to think of anything original. The up-tempo songs are musically more like The Levellers (or even The Pogues) with, say, Teddy Thompson doing the vocals. The slower songs are darker downbeats--more Lambchop-ish. Try imagining Brown Trout Blues being sung by a 1990s Bob Dylan and you'll see just how fine a song it is.
If you're not sure whether you'll like this, listen to the tracks on JF's MySpace page before you buy (but note that there are slightly ... Read More:

I'm not going to bore you with a sophisticated coffee table critique that actually says little and bores you to tears. But I would say that if you are in to music with a realistic edge, with a tune, but a dark slant on the human physche, then this album's a must. I think it's superb.
