After the release of the magnificent "The Boatman's Call" it seems Nick Cave has chosen to release an album as soon as he had two or three inspired songs ready. It was certainly true for "No More Shall We Part", "Nocturama" and "Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus" and it goes for "Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!" as well.
On this latest release the songs "Hold on to yourself" and "Jesus of the Moon" hold the standard we have come to expect from Nick Cave over the years, while the rest are bland and leave no lasting impression, even after repeated listening. When Nick Cave finds his inspiration he is an exceptional songwriter and performer so I'll give three stars for the two songs alone. If only he had put the best songs from the last four ... i noticed someone else likened them to The Kooks, which is true. But really am I the only one who thinks that this is actually Robert Smith singing!? - perhaps under a psydonym or maybe his offspring? - If you like The Cure (Head on The Door stuff) then you'll be charmed by this - they are so similar it's unbelievable. But nice that someone is carrying on The Cure banner.

I agree with most of the other reviews that this is the best Blonde album. Although I've got a lot of the tracks already, my existing CD (The Complete Picture) is over a decade old, so I was after a brighter sound.
This remastered version certainly delivers the goods. It sound bright and sharp, without being over-engineered, a problem I found with Greatest Hits: Sight And Sound, where the band seemed to be playing seperately then put together.

Before Pearl Jam and Soundgarden exploded on to the world stage in the early 90's came this well crafted and moving tribute to Mother Love Bone front-man Andrew Wood.
Born out of ideas from Chris Cornell (Wood's room-mate) and Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard (ex-Mother Love Bone), this is an exercise in how to pay hommage to one of your friends.
At times dark and moody, the album is never anything less than reverential toward the memory of Wood but with sincere and poignant pose and grace.
It can be mellow, it can be balls to the wall rock n roll, but with songs as good as "Say Hello to Heaven", "Pushing Forward Back" and the bon-fide grunge classic "Hunger Strike", it doesn't really matter. The music wraps around you, cossets you and takes you ... Read More:

I would like to take this opportunity to express my feelings not only about this album but also about the Human League who are one of my favourite bands and an inspiration, not only for their music but their togetherness as a band.
Firstly, the Greatest Hits album. The only track I'm not too keen on is the remix of 'Don't You Want Me' at the end, which I find a bit tacky (couldn't Virgin have put 'Heart Like A Wheel' on instead?). The other tracks on the album are of at least a good standard, with my favourites being 'Love Is All That Matters', 'Together In Electric Dreams', 'Human', 'Mirror Man' and 'Tell Me When' which was the song that introduced me to the band. Overall it is a superb collection of fine electronic music.

Port O'Brien could be this years left field classic. The Oakland duo of Van Pierszalowski and Cambria Goodwin provide a collection of folk tinged pop songs augmented by banjo, cello and violin like Death Cab For Cutie covering The Waterboys. All We Could Do Was Sing follows on from 2007's collection of self-recorded early songs "The Wind and the Swell," which garnered enough praise to raise their profile sufficiently.
The slightly gruff multi- harmonic overload of opening track " I Woke Up Today" is a bit of a misnomer as it hints at a kind of rustic Arcade Fire but this band are actually far more stripped back and confessional than that. There is an intimacy and empathy to this music that hauls them back from the more ostentatious levels of that type of music. Not that ... Read More:

I can only agree with the earlier reviewer, the pairing of Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan is a match made in heaven. Some unkindly dismiss Belle as the 'princess of twee' but not here, that's for certain. There's a strong sense of rhythm dominating much of the music, and wonderful arrangements; False Husband has a terrific Morricone 'spagetti western' sound, a lone guitar with reverb disappearing into some deep well, and then those sonorous tubular bells.
There's a good range of material, nearly all composed by Isobel, who also produces as well as singing and playing quite a variety of instruments. While the singing voice of the album is Lanegan's, it's definitely her project, and one that has real substance.
As the previous reviewer said, the sound from ... Read More:

This Album is an absolute must. One of the best albums i own.. and i have to admit i own a lot of albums!
On some albums you find the odd few songs you like, the others you dont and because of that you never listen to .. Thats quite annoying because you know the artist can create such great songs so why is only half the album good !?
But this is different, every song it sheer brilliance, something else, and simply amazing. A truely great band, and a truely great album.
A Must Have For Everyone.

I first heard these guys live, placed number three in the pecking order with The Answer and Roadstar. Despite not knowing a thing about them they blew me away and, in my opinion, the other bands.
In the raw live environment they really came across well so I was slightly disappointed on buying the debut when production took the edge off slightly. The album was still great, just failed to capture that live power.
The new album goes a long way to solving that but it's also stepped up to the plate in quality of songs.
There are loads of these 70's style revivalist bands around, some of them adding a slightly more modern feel or tempo to the material, but loads of them over produced and overblown and lacking subtlety. Every time i listen to this album it grows ... Read More:
