"Want One" is, all things considered, Rufus Wainwright's best album. It is here that he perfected his baroque take on musical magic realism (which he fairly sustained through to "Want Two"), before his frankly surprising creative collapse on "Release The Stars" and subsequent escape into the qualitatively inconsistent cabaret pastiche of "Rufus Does Judy".
Here, proceedings get started on a pleasantly leftist note with "Oh What A World". The appropriately named "I Don't Know What It Is" cranks things up considerably, but keeps its meaning to itself. The pleasant electronic keyboard extravaganza of "Vicious World" recalls Stevie Wonder, while "Pretty Things" proves Rufus and plain piano go quite well together on their own.

The warmth of KD Lang's voice combines with skilled musicians and first division songwriters to create one of the best albums you'll ever hear.

In a (relatively) recent article, Uncut Magazine assessed the best albums that Johnny Marr has been involved in. It gave "The Queen is Dead" the award of "Critic's Choice", but it gave "Meat is Murder" the award of "Uncut Classic". There appears to be a growing recognition that this album stands out an absolute classic. The inclusion of "How Soon is Now?" on the WEA reissue certainly helps. I consider this to be one of the finest songs ever written.
It's a rather sad indictment of contemporary British music that the Smiths are somewhat "off-radar". A number of US artists have a more positive appreciation (The Shins and Of Montreal to mention a couple).
Anyway, this album is a must. Buy it now. Loads of great tracks - read the other ... Read More:

What the hell is the amazon reviewer listening to - Avalanche aimless? Absolute tosh and nonsense. Great song. The Oasis cover? Redundant. Always skip past it. The rest? absolute bloody genius. Record companies? God bless the internet.

I can only agree with the earlier reviewer, the pairing of Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan is a match made in heaven. Some unkindly dismiss Belle as the 'princess of twee' but not here, that's for certain. There's a strong sense of rhythm dominating much of the music, and wonderful arrangements; False Husband has a terrific Morricone 'spagetti western' sound, a lone guitar with reverb disappearing into some deep well, and then those sonorous tubular bells.
There's a good range of material, nearly all composed by Isobel, who also produces as well as singing and playing quite a variety of instruments. While the singing voice of the album is Lanegan's, it's definitely her project, and one that has real substance.

This compilation has been put together by a fan - and it shows. Ever present and correct are all the best singles and album tracks from the first 4 albums and then a cursory nod to a couple of later tracks after the band had gone off the boil slightly. The run down stops there (thankfully) so unlike most compilations quality reigns supreme. What a joy to hear these tracks again! I was a bit young to have lived through their rise to fame but fortunately had an older brother who did so i could listen to his collection - to me this stuff is still relevant and has stood the test of time. Silver, Killing Moon, Never Stop, the Puppet all fantastic pop moments.

This still is one of my all time favourites of his work, though as we know, each and every album is too distinct to compare. It's a continuation of his style from his previous album 'Far Away Trains Passing By" but with an added twist - the fine introduction of Judith Beck, the enchanting and breathtaking vocal addition.
In life, there are certain albums we have carried with us, where ever we go, whether through new life experiences or whilst reconciling old ones, this music co-creates with one's own memories. Isn't that what music does? This album is one of those classics.
My favourite song "On My Own" is an addictive tune that is completely different from the rest of the album, but throws me back to the days of Joy Division...and then one is carried into ... Read More:

There are a handful of very good songs - Love Spreads, Breaking into Heaven, Daybreak, Driving South and Ten Storey Long. The rest veers from the pleasant but ultimately disposable to cringe inducingly bad, mostly for the descent into rock cliche that is embarrassing for a group of lads inspired by the punk era and its' values. I guess by the start of the nineties they had lost the hunger, I think we knew that the summer of 1989 were the glory days and when the moment has gone, that's it. They burned brightly but all too briefly.

While I agree that there may be more comprehensive Clash sets available (my personal favourite being 'The Story Of The Clash Volume 1') this release does exactly what it says on the tin. All the singles, though not in chronological order - unlike the previous 1991 version, combined with far improved artwork. And it is this that sold me on this CD.
The colourful booklet has been designed with care and features notes from the great and good on each track. Everybody from Pete Townsend to Danny Boyle and many inbetween, get to comment on their favourites and the impact these tracks had on them. Single sleeve artwork and illustrations adorn the liner notes together with some fine shots of the band. All in a slip-sleeved jewel case. And for once, no grammatical mistakes seem to have ...
