I only came across Biffy Clyro after Puzzle was released and I loved that album so much I decided to explore the preceding albums. Blackened Sky is the debut, released on a minor label back in 2002. Out of the three albums prior to Puzzle, this is the album that has most in common with Biffy's current effort. But that doesn't mean it shares the same sound entirely. It has some very tender songs on here that are certainly worth listening and Biffy should be credited for not sticking to the same tried and tested formula - the variety between songs and albums is pretty huge. I love the tender songs on here, the best being "Joy.Discovery.Invention" and "Christopher's River", which are both truly excellent tracks (the latter being especially ... Read More:

I was outraged - simply outraged - to discover that this band were named after Linda Kasabian, one of the murderers of Sharon Tate, and member of the Manson family. How dare these northern tykes pay tribute to someone of her monstrous calibre? They should be ashamed of themselves, and their parents, and their parents' parents.
I ask you, what is next? I bet some band will even name themselves 'Manson', and I also bet they'll be so uneducated that they can't even spell the word. Give me clean, wholesome bands like the Beach Boys any day, especially that delightful 20/20 album.

Before Pearl Jam and Soundgarden exploded on to the world stage in the early 90's came this well crafted and moving tribute to Mother Love Bone front-man Andrew Wood.
Born out of ideas from Chris Cornell (Wood's room-mate) and Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard (ex-Mother Love Bone), this is an exercise in how to pay hommage to one of your friends.
At times dark and moody, the album is never anything less than reverential toward the memory of Wood but with sincere and poignant pose and grace.
It can be mellow, it can be balls to the wall rock n roll, but with songs as good as "Say Hello to Heaven", "Pushing Forward Back" and the bon-fide grunge classic "Hunger Strike", it doesn't really matter. The music wraps around you, cossets you and takes ... Read More:

I bought this album for my wife as part of a birthday present. I'd not been a great New Order fan at the time of their rise to power - possibly still a bit miffed at the demise of the 'Division'. However, I have listened to it and my opinion of this group has changed. The orchestration is very good, musical abitilty is far superior to their contemporaries and I would recommend it to anyone with a taste for 1980's/1990's alternative rock/electric music.

While I agree that there may be more comprehensive Clash sets available (my personal favourite being 'The Story Of The Clash Volume 1') this release does exactly what it says on the tin. All the singles, though not in chronological order - unlike the previous 1991 version, combined with far improved artwork. And it is this that sold me on this CD.
The colourful booklet has been designed with care and features notes from the great and good on each track. Everybody from Pete Townsend to Danny Boyle and many inbetween, get to comment on their favourites and the impact these tracks had on them. Single sleeve artwork and illustrations adorn the liner notes together with some fine shots of the band. All in a slip-sleeved jewel case. And for once, no grammatical mistakes seem to ... Read More:

An average album let down by a very weak production - a few good songs but nothing in the same class as Master Of Puppets or Reign In Blood.
1988's State Of Euphoria & 1990's Persistence Of Time are FAR superior despite lacking the iconic status of this vastly overrated 1987 effort.
Very mid tempo with a tinny drum sound and thin guitars - not this band's finest hour...........

Well i must say that this is a really fantastic album. from pounding fuzz riffs to mellow gentle melodies Liam Finn has created an album to be proud of. We have to remember this music is coming from a 24 year old who has played basically all instruments on the album as well as engineering it. The single Better to Be is a super opener to the album, along with songs like ill be lightening, gather to the chapel and the upbeat music moves my feet. You definitley wouldn't see James Morrison or anyone in around Finns age group writing so many emotionally charged songs. May it continue!

This is a collection of really well crafted songs, in fact, 'All My Life' is one of my all time favourite songs. The album has great vocals and guitar throughout but what on earth have they done with the drums and bass. Both sound as though they were recorded in a padded cell giving the impression that the drum kit was cobbled together on a budget of less that $100. In my dreams this album was produced by Jimmy Page with Flea on bass and John Bonham on drums. 'One by One' could have been a classic.
