Having heard of editors but not knowing much about them i embarked upon eurockeennes de belfort festival 2007, midday on the second day and on came Editors, the set started well and i was instantly impressed with the quality of the live performances, as the set continued i felt being drawn into their sound and by the end i was impressed enough to order this album as soon as i got home. Also, another thing that impressed me was the fact that the lead singer came into the crowd with the public after their set to watch queens of the stoneage. The album is very good with some instant hooks and some songs that gradually grow on you, the sound is very unique for the time and although i can see similarities to JD i think it is unfair to labour them ... Having been bored of general student genres of music entering my second year (september2006) a friend suggested that i listen to gogol bordello. Having accumulated an ipod full of samey dnb and hiphop i needed something interesting and catchy to perhaps overt my musical attention to something a bit more alternative. URRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!Simply stunning, from the moment i started listening to 'Sally' i was bowled over! The originality of the instrumental mixed with the raw and unique vocals of Hutz was simply incredible. 3 months after having first listened to underdog world strike Gogol came and played moscow where i was studying at the time. To say that the hairs on the back of my neck stood up in this chic, underground cellar style venue when gogol ... Read More:

I originally posted the review below on the 2001 release which has been deleted for many a year.
It's nice to see this classic album given a deserved re-release, especially as it's (yet another) two-disc deluxe edition. The album has had a welcome remaster and included unreleased demos and live tracks.
OK, this is the original lineups last album. Released in September 1979, it shows that the band were heading in a new direction. Though behind the scenes, the band were slowly falling apart, their recorded offerings were still of the highest quality.
Side one is shared between Shelley and Diggle. Pete offers us the catchy "Paradise", the gorgeous "You Say You Don't Love Me" and it's b-side "Raison D'etre". Steve gives us ... Read More:

Ok, this is not Radiohead's finest moment by any stretch. But if for one minute we forget OK Computer and The Bends and all their other albums and concentrate souly on Pablo Honey, it's a masterpiece. There's not a single song on the album that is out of place or lacking in energy and spirit. Yes, Creep is overplayed and overrated, but that doesn't stop it being a fantastic pop tune - something that even Radiohead cannot claim to have properly done since. If you put this album on expecting OK Computer, yes it's going to fail and probably go in your bin, but if you put this on expecting a decent guitar pop album, you won't be disappointed. Lastly - if this had been released by any other band, wouldn't it be considered a decent album, it's just with the hindsight ... Read More:

When Mogwai released 'Young Team' back in 1997, they were a breath of fresh air. They combined the rawness of Pavement circa 'Slanted & Enchanted' with the atmosphere so fondly remembered on Slint's milestone album 'Spiderland'.
11 years on from that landmark release and Mogwai have gone through many up's and downs. 'Come On Die Young' blew us all away with its blinding dynamics and sinister air, but conversley, 'Rock Action' left me with an empty feeling and made me wonder wheather this once great band had gone as far as it could. Since 'Rock Action', Mogwai have released a steady stream of good if not remarkable albums (although I beleive 'Happy Songs For Happy People' to be somewhat of a lost classic).

I'm going to keep this very simple...this is THE best album of 2008 - no question! I'm a big fan of guitar bands and buy lots of music (too much if I'm honest, maybe 6 albums a week) so trust me when I tell you that I know what I'm talking about!
Frightened Rabbit are a rare band - talented, passionate, interesting yet incredibly likeable. Some people may find some of their lyrics a little too dark (especially concerning the tracks 'The Modern Leper' and 'Poke') but Frightened Rabbit are much more than just slightly disturbing lyrics. I really can't think of a band to compare them to, and although Snow Patrol and Idlewild have a similar sound, both these bands are far more lightweight and 'fluffy' to deserve to be compared to F.R.
All I can do is urge you to ... Read More:

To me the lead vocalist sounds like Donald Fagen .Surely track 9 'Here come the Romans' is Steely Dan in disguise !!! i really can't tell the difference. If you are a fan have a listen.
Then there are a few tacks that sound like Neil Young but the album is refreshingly different even though Cherry Ghosts sound very familiar.
