ahh help static-x have gone pop on us. but dont worry its great because you can now sing along to the band as they have proper melodies, woo-hoo. its great this album it is, there are still big riffs everywhere but they arent as prominant in the mix there is more emphasis on the beats and the vocals which by wayne static standards are restrained on this one. he actually shows that hes not too bad at holding a tune and the songs sound better for it as the band have managed to expand their sound and streamline it at the same time. they are still the same beast as before as on songs like desrtroy all and new pain but its songs like shadow zone and kill your idols and all in wait thatshow the evolution in sound that stand out. a very good album ... Xtort shows a KMFDM back to push the boundaries further after the more "commercial" (but nonetheless different) Nihil of 1995. It sees a return of the unsuaual rhythm patterns seen in the past, as well as some awesome synth and fantastic guitar riffs.
Some tracks, such is IKONS sound like the ever-so-familiar punk/industrial/techno offring from the UK, The Prodigy. Maybe this is the influence of Scottish vocalist Chris Connelly, or maybe this was just the sound at the time, with The Prodigy beginning to emerge into the mainstream.
As is usual with KMFDM, there is very little in the way of singing, except from the backing vocalists, who add a bit of an American 80s feel into the whole thing. You are not, however sold short with the vocals, which do more than ... Read More:

It was quite surprising that Throbbing Gristle decided to reform in 2004 for a few festival appearances, a performance at the Astoria & the 'TG NOW' e.p. The mission, after all, had been terminated in 1981 when things appeared to have been getting predictable, the band members afterwards releasing material as Psychic TV, Chris & Cosey, & Coil. Recorded 2004/2005 and much delayed for reasons that still aren't apparent, 'Part Two - The Endless Not' is the first TG studio material since mini-album 'Journey Through a Body' (though some might cite 1980's live-in-the-studio performance 'Heathen Earth' or the Jarman-soundtrack 'In the Shadow of the Sun').
'TG NOW' was quite extreme, all of the songs pushing ten-minutes in duration, suggesting that ... Read More:

There can only be one main point here and that is Eisbrecher and the 'Antibody' album are Rammstein-lite.
But don't let that put you off as there is a lot to be enjoyed here and both the standard of playing and production values are good.
The style swings back and forth between a sort of mid-70's rainbow with sweeping synths and no little pomposity,(Der Anfang & kinder der nacht) and some out and out neue deutsche industrial,(phosphor & kein mitleid). In between one or two songs stand out as different from the rest most notably the single 'forget me not' which out-goths just about everything and sounds like the sisters of mercy never went away!
The reason for only 3 stars is the fact that is forever going to hold this group back, Rammstein got here ... Read More:

Whilst going through some of my old albums, I chanced across this 1997 debut effort from LA band Coal Chamber. Lumpen, insipid nu-metal of the very worst variety. It's been 11 years since this album was released, and time hasn't done it any favours. Songs such as Bradley, Big Truck and Clock have such obvious, dumb riffs that would have felt dated at the time, and sound so dull now. Amir of the Desert, has to be just about the biggest waste of 45 seconds recording time ever. Compared to other contemporary albums released around the same time that still sound fresh (Deftones' Around the Fur, SoaD's debut), Coal Chamber's debut sounds very tame in comparison. Dez Fafara, now fronting DevilDriver is well shot of this musical car crash.

Due to the initial delays of UK Release this review refers to the Import version I have, which may differ slightly (the Import has the 14 listed tracks). The Planet Mu taster remix 12" (Lonely Soldier/Guns & Lovers/Hellfire)indicated some slower tracks on this release, and overall the feel is slightly more laid-back than some MBM material. Lynn Farmer's pristine live drumming melds perfectly with Jack's percussive programming, and trademark basslines and bleeps, but melodic content is far less here than on his previous "At The Centre" offering. Percussion and loops abound, with some interesting vocal samples and a couple of rap collaborations ("Young Cassius" is particularly strong with it's catchy "Tip of the tongue" rapid-fire repeat chorus). A thoughtful, yet more traditional ... Read More:

The reason for the lost stars - a couple of the tracks (Foreword and Liebestod) are very strongly based in classical music, and make an odd addition to what is otherwise very much gothic electronica. They may appeal to some, but they don't appeal to me, and the feel of them doesn't sit well with the rest of the album, unfortunately. So, that's the main bad point out the way. Tracks like Carbon on here are powerful and brooding, and are great either on your CD player or to dance to at a club. Praise for the Fallen is probably a better example of VNV Nation's work, and it doesn't suffer from neo-classical pieces thown into somwhere they look lost. Like PFTF, though, this album is grandiose, brooding, and emotive - it's pompous, political, and still well worth listening to.
