Of Kenny G's CDs, or at least of the ones I have, this is a rather quiet and expressive set. Of course, it's geared for those who like Kenny G, and so is my review.
I don't think Kenny G is jazz. He's strictly easy listening or adult contemporary, although there are jazz embellishments here. This is a saxophonist expressing himself to those who choose to listen, and he creates an intimate atmosphere for his fans.
No, he's not one of the great versatile musicians, but he expresses and entertains those who are in the same flow that he is.
The only ones who mention his name in the same breath as Miles Davis and John Coltrane are his bashers. I haven't heard any Kenny G fan compare him with these jazz greats. ... Read More:

I read the reviews below, and I can agree with almost everything said, but I just have to give this one 5 stars. I will agree that Bump is a better album overall, and showcases a more varied set of grooves, but this album is a certified classic too, and deserves 5 stars any day! It is the first recording produced by the legendary John Scofield with the amazing Medeski, Martin and Wood, and these four musicians were born to play together!
Medeski, Martin and Wood should be listed as artists on this album too! Together for about 12 years, they are the finest players in their admittedly small genre, and fans of out-there funk will love this - MMW demonstrate an demonstrate an infinite capacity to swing their asses off while also being able ... This is simply an astonishing record that demonstrates the exceptional levels of communication that four people can achieve. Yes it's jazz, but not as you know it and you will find the hairs on the back of your neck standing up over and again and the music expresses thoughts you never thought you could have. After 45 minutes of the most intense power, the set is topped off by "Peace Piece", a moment of sublime beauty with just one classical guitar.
This is the sort of music that makes you priveleged to be a member of the human race.

This is a real surprise. A challenging and rewarding listen. David Torn is great at finding people to play with (or they at finding him)! If you like this, you must also check out ZAUM's 'I Hope You Never Love Anything As I Love You', another album featuring controlled, challenging yet most enjoyable improvised music. Buy both!

A truely outstanding album from start to finnish. Many catchy tunes with the incredible talent of Thelonious Monk (Piano). This album goes from strength to strength. Highly recommended from Jazz fans looking to start their collection. Overall it is an excellent album performed by real professionals. A must have for anyone who calls themself a Jazz fan.
Release Date September 02, 2002
This was pianist Thelonious Monk's first album for the Columbia label; it was made between October 31st and November 6th in '62. 'Body And Soul' and 'Just A Gigolo' are unaccompanied piano solos by Monk. The remainder of the tracks feature him in a quartet with Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), John Ore (bass) and Frankie Dunlop (drums). Rouse sounds a bit relentless at times, but never quite monotonous. Dunlop's bouncy drumming is a joy to listen to, and Monk himself is on good quirky form. These are studio recordings, the sound quality is excellent and the playing time is 73 minutes. A very attractive item - bewitching even.

Having read great reviews for this album, after having listened to Headhunters and after having see him live in the best musical experience of my life in November 2006, I decided to by this album. Frankly, I was slightly dissapointed, but perhaps I had been previously spoilt by the offering of Headhunters and the amazing live performance. I do not profess to be a jazz expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I can only describe my own feelings towards the tracks on this album:
I found Palm Grease to be a rather protracted track and, while it may be unfair to compare it with the equaivalent first track on Headhunters, it lacked the mind-blowing high that Chameleon has. 3/5
Actual Proof is a very intelligent track which introduces ... Read More:

It's the simpleness of his warm, infectious grooves that makes Horace Silver's music so enduring. The Bossa Nova infused title track is a typical example of his ability to pen catchy rhythms, "Song for my father," is notable for Joe Henderson's blazing solo and it remains one of those Blue Note signature tunes. Each track starts with a bass note and a single piano chord before gently building into a tumultuous ebb and flow. "Calcutta Cutie," has a slighly eerie, claustrophobic feel to it and it combines well with the snaking,"Que Pasa." The liner notes on this re-issued version give an interesting insight into the rag bag of musicians that Silver used in laying down the tracks. The rather lengthy recording time and the two quintets involved can only add to the ... Read More:
