Get Me Some

CD-Charts > Music > Instruments
by: Jeff Healey

Release Date May 01, 2002
This album is awesome. Simple as. The quality of the songs, the guitarplay, everything basically, is just so good that it's hard to believe. In fact, if you asked me to pick my favourite song off it, I'd be stumped. "My Life Story" is awesome, as is "Macon Georgia Blue"...but for heartfelt emotion, you can't go far wrong with "Rachel's Song" which takes on a really poignant edge following his untimely death earlier this year. Jeff may be dead, but his music will live on. Vaya con dios Jeff.

Live at Montreux

CD-Charts > Music > Instruments
by: Stevie Ray Vaughan

Release Date February 04, 2002
This really is two separate live albums packaged together. Both are excellent in their own right and would represent a great introduction to SRV for people who don't like to start with a "Best of" cd that becomes redundant once you've decided you like them and have bought up all their back catalogue. Anyone want my Led Zep Remasters?

Anyway, it's two separate concerts at Montreux. The first one is strangely greeted with boos from the crowd, who were presumably expecting HearSay some 21 years before they formed. The second is much better received.

In both concerts, SRV's guitar has an Albert King style twang to it, which gets me every time. His fingers seem to move pretty fast too although, unlike Buddy Guy, his brain ... Read More:

The Complete Blind Willie Johnson

CD-Charts > Music > Instruments
by: Blind Willie Johnson

Release Date
As a guitar player I was aware of Blind Willie Johnson before. But, I don't play slide guitar (or at least I didn't), so he was never a major influence. After attending a couple of workshops with the great Martin Simpson on whom Blind Willie Johnson has been a huge influence in terms of his slide guitar work, I took the plunge and bought this compilation. For some, his rough, gravely false bass booming voice might prove intially to be a little unapproachable. The material too is completely uncompromising. Willie Johnson was a gospel singer, probably the finest the world has ever seen or heard. But this is raw, unadulterated gospel music from the deep south. There are no frills just simple songs delivered with raw passion, involvement and commitment ... Read More:

Takin' My Time: Remastered

CD-Charts > Music > Instruments
by: Bonnie Raitt

Release Date March 11, 2002
From the wonderful cover, to the great selection of songs, the wonderful musicians (as well as Little Feat there is Taj Mahal, Earl Palmer, Jim Keltner, Van Dyke Parks, Milt Holland etc) and above all Bonnie's fabulous voice; this was a landmark recording that still remains one of her best records. I bought this LP when it first came out in 1973 because of Little Feat's involvement but it quickly became one of my all time favourite records of all time and I've remained a huge Bonnie Raitt fan ever since. Lowell George started producing the sessions with Little Feat as the backing band but after weeks of partying in the studio very little had been recorded and guitarist John Hall was brought in the finish the project. He did a great job!

Hawk Squat

CD-Charts > Music > Instruments
by: J.B. Hutto

Release Date October 01, 1999
Hound Dog Taylor and J.B. Hutto were the last disciples of the king of post-war slide guitar, the great Elmore James, and Joseph Benjamin Hutto's main source of inspiration is obvious on this his first studio album, "Hawk Squat". The first track, "Speak My Mind", is in fact a thinly-veiled cover of "Dust My Broom".

But don't let that deter you. This is one of the all-time great Chicago blues albums, recorded between 1966 and 1968, and perfectly showcasing Hutto's raw, slash-and-burn approach without ever getting muddled or losing its sense of restraint.

"Hawk Squat" boasts both powerful, hard-rocking tracks like the awesome "Hip-Shakin'", and the deep-dug grooves of "20% Alcohol" and "Notoriety Woman".

J.B. Hutto and the Hawks ... Read More:

A Century of Blues

CD-Charts > Music > Instruments
by: Various Artists

Release Date November 05, 2001
There are many collections of blues music available, and this one stands comparison with any of the others. This a very varied collection taking recordings from the 1940s through to the 1990s. Interesting blend old and new. This set does not really take the listener through a chronological history of blues music but gives more of a sample of the music through 50 years of recordings, and thereby doesnt really live up to its title as such. However if you want a wide introduction to this type of music it fits the bill, taking you from from Son House through to Dr Feelgood. Giving you a taste of different artists and different styles of blues music. I suspect many will be surprised at how many of these tracks they have heard at one time or another, through radio, ... Rush: Original Soundtrack

CD-Charts > Music > Instruments
by: Eric Clapton

Release Date January 13, 1992
this Film soundtrack is surely some of the most sublime, brilliant, purely emotional guitar you will ever hear Eric Clapton play. The critics seemed to completely miss this one - it sort of got lost because Unplugged came out at the same time. The final track is a bit commercial (Tears in Heaven) but it got the airplay and caught everyone's ear ... the rest of this album is ESSENTIAL if you like Clapton.

My Kind of Blues

CD-Charts > Music > Instruments
by: B.B. King

Release Date May 05, 2003
B.B.King has described 'My Kind of Blues' as his favourite album and it's easy to see why. Recorded around March 1960 using only a sparse accompaniment of Lloyd Glenn(piano), probably Ralph Hamilton(bass) and Jessie Sailes(drums) King's stinging guitar and powerful voice come across beautifully. Originally one of 12 LPs B.B.King made for the CROWN label 'My Kind of Blues' has now expanded from 10 to 18 tracks with songs coming from the pens of Sleepy John Estes, Roosevelt Sykes, Muddy Waters and Doctor Clayton.
Expertly re-mastered by ACE RECORDS and compiled and annotated by blues expert John Broven this is a model blues CD re-issue and an ideal introduction to B.B.King's music.

The Complete Collection

CD-Charts > Music > Instruments
by: Robert Johnson

Release Date April 28, 2003
I have not bought this album and the reason why is that Robert Johnson recorded 29 songs not 28 and for some absurd reason they have not included "Last Fair Deal" on this supposed "complete" collection. Therefore I advise anyone wishing to buy Robert Johnson recordings to get a real complete recordings instead of this sadly incomplete one.

CD-Charts > Music > Instruments
by: Bonnie Raitt

Release Date March 11, 2002
Bonnie's second record contained a more varied mix of sounds and styles that her mainly blues debut album. We get two early 60s R&B numbers - Barbara George's "I know" and Rudy Clarke's wonderful "If you got to make a fool of somebody", both handled superbly. Also, two songs by contemporary singer-songwriters; Chris Smither's "Love me like a man" and Jackson Browne's "Under a falling sky", again Bonnie sounds completely at home and delivers great versions. She also contributes three of her own songs and charmingly reinterprets one of her mentor, Sippie Wallace's, songs "You got to know how". For me the record's best tracks are two ballads that I would say remain two of Bonnie's best ever performances - Joel Zoss's plaintive "Too long at the fair" and "Love has no pride" by ... Read More:
