The release of these 1965 recordings of Son House seems now even sadder, listening forty years on. His technique all shot to pieces, the voice is all that's left, raw and charged-up. Even the best thing on here, his famously raw version of John the Revelator, is a clumsy parody of the much-circulated classic 1928 take by Blind Willie Johnson and his wife. By the mid-1960s, the white-boy audience condescendingly wanted their black bluesmen raw and emotive. What was lost sight of was how formidably accomplished, varied and interested in technique the earlier generations of black blues players had been, an immeasurably richer field of skills and playing. Clapton maintains a consistency with August. Better than Journeyman..much better when you listen to Behind the Mask and Walk Away. Whilst writing these reviews, I've just realized that I'm lucky to listen to such memorable tunes; the titles of which I cannot think of in other situations. Another song reaches Divine Heights 'Holy Mother'. Never knew Clapton had such a range.
A Gem definitely albeit a bit flawed.

The great, career-spanning "Crossroads" compilation was a box set that appealed to both beginners and hardcore Clapton fanatics.
"Crossroads 2 - Live In The Seventies" mainly appeals to fanatics.

Spanning four discs and consisting almost entirely of live material (there are a handful of studio outtakes), this music will enthrall completists and archivists, who will find a wealth of compelling performances here. But they will also find a fair share of mediocre, uninspired tracks, and four versions of Robert Johnson's "Rambling On My Mind".
No-one needs four versions of "Rambling On My Mind" by the same artist on the same album. And two of them were recorded less than five months apart.

This looks to me like an absolute bargain for a cd that should be in all BB fans' collections.

Assuming that you're not tempted by that "Definitive Best of" collection, you need to have When Love Comes to Town and To Know You is to Love You somewhere and this seems as good a place as any. There are other classic tracks too (I'm especially keen on Ghetto Woman) but given how varied the collection is there are bound to be one or two tracks that don't tickle your fancy.

There's a certain feel to this album that's difficult to describe. The instantly recognisable sound of BB's guitar is such a perfect overlay on top of the rest of the music. It's a bit like being a Disney animator, where you have all the background on one sheet of paper and ... Read More:
