Eric Clapton has probably been involved in more 'debut' albums than anyone else, being in Yardbirds, Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek And The Dominoes and then officially solo. Eric is clearly stoned/wasted on the album cover and it looks like his Strat is propping him up in the chair!. At this point in his career Clapton was playing some of his best guitar as shown on the majestic 'Layla' album. This is a nice little companion to that album and the appropriately titled 'slunky' kicks off the album as though the tape operator has just started recording mid way through a jam session, Bobby Keys pre Brown Sugar on sax. The Slide Area

The secret to enjoying this album is to skip the first track (UFO...), which is a bit of a turkey, and for which I've deducted a star! The rest of the disc is well up to the expected standard, featuring phenomenal musicianship (Keltner, Hiatt etcetera) and pin-sharp production. From a rootsy take on "Blue Suede Shoes" to the closing track, "That's the Way..." A brilliant album. If you have a soul, buy it!

A great soundtrack from a classic Swayze movie. The Jeff Healy band are superb and give the film that extra something all the way through. The other tracks finish the score off nicely, with even Swayze chipping in!

Now, I wouldn't call myself an avid Eric Clapton fan - yes I like some of his early work, but in total I only have four CD's (including Derek & The Dominoes and Blind Faith) and the unplugged & sessions for Robert Johnson DVD's. So, listening and watching (I have the 2 CD + DVD edition) this in a "neutral" capacity I was thoroughly impressed by the contents. The tracks are varied and yes, do include the big hits you would expect (Layla, Tears in Heaven etc.) and, there are great renditions of Badge and Bell Bottom Blues. The playing is tight from a collection of extremely talented and experienced musicians with Billy Preston delivering vocals on one of the end tracks. So it's five stars from me.

For anyone like myself who was a young record buyer in the 1950's, this CD is a great trip down Memory Lane, and the music stands up very well after all these years.

Antoine "Fats" Domino (b. 1928, New Orleans) emerged in the mid 1950s from the strictly African-American R & B scene ("The Fat Man" was recorded as early as 1949) to "cross over" onto the mainstream Pop charts. He had a great run of singles successes on both sides of the Atlantic, with "Blueberry Hill", "Ain't That A Shame", "Whole Lotta Lovin'" and others, all covered on this CD.

Money and Cigarettes

This is one of Clapton's better solo albums from the 80s, which successfully blends his blues roots with more commercial songs. The band which includes guitarists Albert Lee and Ry Cooder and Chris Stainton on keyboards, is brilliant throughout. Clapton contributes some really good songs such as "The Shape you're in", "Ain't going down" and "Pretty girl". He also turns in some excellent versions of blues cllassics like Sleepy John Estes' " Everybody oughta make a change", the Albert King number "Crosscut saw" and Johnny Otis' 'Hand jive'sound-alike "Crazy country hop". Probably my overall favourite is "I've got a rock n roll heart" a wonderfully catchy, melodic laid-back rocker that as a single even cracked the US top 20.

In the Right Place

This is New Orleans music at its finest.From the syncopated rhythyms of the mighty Meters (surely the funkiest outfit since James Brown) to the gravel voiced voodoo of the good Doctor. The horn arrangements of Allen Toussaint also deserve a special mention. Standout tracks for me are 'Right place wrong time'(checkout the bass line of George Porter jnr) and 'Qualified' which paste an idiot grin to my face every time I hear them. A top 100 album for sure.

Crawfish Fiesta

This is the last record officially recorded by the great Professor Longhair. If you don't know Fess was the Godfather of post 1940's New Orleans Piano. From somewhere he virtually invented a new style that Dr John, Allen Toussaint, James Booker (and our own Jools Holland) all borrowed from to differing degrees. Willie Fugal's Blues perhaps represent this best on this album. This is solo Piano except for added Conga.
His vocal style is also quite unique as well. Deceptively simple which occasionally becomes a sort of yodel.
This is a joyous record with 3 Sax players, a conga player and Dr John on Guitar. The recording quality is very good, as this was recorded in 1979 or 1980.
Rock n Roll, Blues and Jazz fans will all like this album. ... Read More:
