In 1969 (when some other guys were doing something trivial like landing on the Moon) Colosseum's Valentye Suite stood out head and shoulders above everything else being played - quite magnificent!
The Valentyne Suite (when I were a lad) only had 5 tracks - but is almost perfect. Hiseman's drumming is astonishing, Dave Clempson's guitar playing on a par with Clapton, along with the incredible Dick H-S (RIP) on sax - and the swirling organ from Dave Greenslade.
The Tracks
1. Kettle - Roaring start to the album. Everything a jazz-rock track should be, but with that special, distinctive, Colosseum magic.
2. Elegy - just beautiful, with delicate strings. Tears to the eyes.
3. Butty's Blues - Yes, it's a ... Read More:

Having cried so much watching the film, I decided to purchase the soundtrack. I made the mistake of listening to it on my way to work in the car and ended up shedding tears whilst sitting in the traffic! The music of this film played a big part in creating the feelings for the characters and was very touching. As well as the romantic songs played, there is also the swinging 40's music to get you bopping along! If the loved the movie, then get the soundtrack.....you'll love it!

I love Herb Alpert. The best known stuff on this album are the likes of the superlatively bouncy Spanish Flea, the sublime A Taste of Honey, the energetic Tijuana Taxi, Tetris theme Zorba the Greek and of course the theme to the original Casino Royale (the one with David Niven) which is so clever it hurts. But there's nothing on this album that doesn't delight.
Mostly it's instrumental, brass band work and very good brass it is. Like a Mariachi band. It's jolly and fun, and it gets me in a good mood and that makes it pretty fab stuff.

Simple lyrics written in a complicated language - so just listen. You are left with a most beautiful, enchanting collection of music. And listening to it for the 20th time this week...it just gets better.

I loved the music of Carmel from the start, and right back to their roots too. I heard the band's stark and spare version of Tracks of My Tears on the John Peel show and sat bolt upright - just bass, drums and that spectacular, soaring voice. It was totally electrifying, which makes the absence of that song from this collection slightly mystifying.
But that's a small gripe. This is an absolute bargain of an album, packed to the rafters with brilliant tracks across the soul/blues/jazz/swing spectrum. The solid base laid down by Jim Parris and Gerry Darby is laid with a thick, rich cream of brass and the glorious vocals of Carmel McCourt. I hope they're still touring somewhere and that someone continues to enjoy the band's fine music.

I bought this album because it was cheap, and I am interested in jazz. Not that I am a jazz fanatic. I am usually an electronic buff, but want to explore other genres as well to not get the tunnel vision one tends to get with just listening to one genre. So I dare sometimes dive deep into jazz. Not that I have gotten the chance much, so this CD would be a first attempt.
Well, to be frank, I was mildly disappointed. This is not jazz, I know that much. This is soul of various origins. Granted some tracks are really old, and some are very good. But if soul was what I wanted, which is not the case, I would have gone to the local gas station and bought a 10 cd package of the stuff.
Many of these tracks are more famous for their small appearances ... Read More:

Gosh, this took me back to my youth, the age of great and good expectations - the late 1950's and early 60's with their unmistakeable sound and sexy undercurrents.
Excellent recordings, great sound and that velvety sultry voice... Do they still make them like this? Don't know; but this double CD deserves to be in everyone's music library and to be listened to.
