If you really want to know the meaning of Soul then listen to this album by Otis. This album shows how his rapidly developing talent had matured into excellent writing on his own songs such as "Ole Man Trouble", "Respect" and his biggest hit "I've Been Loving You Too Long".
Even the usual covers you get on most albums are delivered by Otis with that feeling of Soul which enhances how they were done by the original artists. Just see what I mean by his versions of " Change Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke, "My Girl" by Smokey Robinson, which was a hit for the Temptations, and so on.
One of the reasons the music on this album is so good, is that Otis was a multi talented artist who could sing, play several instruments and at around ... Read More:

Got this for the "cliffs of dover" track which is on Guitar Hero III for the wii(!) Reminds me of last christmas when Scottish Super Sarah would spasm on the wii guitar with a 12" grin, playing her little electric socks off to this merry track. Not much of an intro on this track - Eric's straight in guns a blazing with his fancy finger work, furiously speeding through to the end. It's not a race Eric! Not listenend to any other tracks from "Ahhh Via Musicom" yet though, but this one is great.

This is a wonderful album with wonderful songs and - especially - a wonderful Ella Fitzgerald. Her voice is more beautiful than ever, but unfortunately her voice plays second fiddle on this album. Nelson Riddle arranged the songs a bit too rich for my taste. The spotlights are for his orchestra. Riddle clearly wanted a change from his previous work with Fitzgerald. His arrangements are a lot less subtle than on the Gershwin Song Book. Especially on Day In, Day Out, where the voice cannot keep up with the brass power. It does work on some songs, though. Especially Something's Got To Give is very good. And when the orchestra mellows a little on the slow songs, like I Remember You, it's magic.

Frank Sinatra was never the least self-pitying singer of all time, which I guess is why he appeals to men of a certain age. 'Only the Lonely' has a freakishly horrible cover (I can't believe it won a Grammy, full marks to Amazon for pointing that out, he looks like Wallace Shawn, for goodness' sake) but the contents are pure gold. Sinatra's voice was never better, and this collection of late-night why-did-she-leave-me standards is one of the finest and most emotionally direct things he ever did. The high point is probably the majestically dejected 'One For My Baby', a maudlin song which Sinatra invests with all the sadness, regret and longing of somebody who no longer gets to go to bed with Ava Gardner.
I actually secretly prefer Sinatra when he's ... Read More:

This is one of my favourite CDs. Playing it on a high end hi-fi system shows it to be a superb recording, (and don't be put off by the fact it is LIVE), and has Diana Krall singing and playing in superb jazz style. What a pity she no longer makes good jazz CDs like this one.

This performance of Rachmaninov's second symphony made quite a stir when it was released on vinyl back in 1973 and although that may seem like a generation ago (because it is, sadly!), this newly (1999) re-mastered version succeeds in recapturing the excitement which its original release created. Prior to this recording, Previn and the LSO had toured with the symphony to Russia, where the unexpurgated version had not been heard for years, and it caused a sensation. Listening to this recording, it is not hard to understand why. This is unashamedly beautiful and lyrical music, played by an orchestra and conductor who had no misgivings about whether the music was fashionable or not, and given its full measure of feeling, with great drama and passion. In its newly re-mastered ... Read More:

Two years ago Sergio Mendes came back into the mainstream with the Grammy-winning "Timeless" co-produced by wil.i.am with songs featuring Erykah Badu, Stevie Wonder, Jill Scott, John Legend, Justin Timberlake and several other international stars. That album, by virtue of its all-star pop line-up and co-producer had a more hip-hop "flava" to it.
Though wil.i.am returns on "Encanto," most of the new album sounds remarkably like Mendes's classic albums from the 60's and 70's with updated technology. It's like a trip back in time when Brasil '66 was heating up the pop charts.
Ledisi, Carlinhos Brown, Jovanotti, Juanes, Gracinha Leporace, and Vanessa da Mata, along with Siedah Garrett, Natalie Cole and wil.i.am possess the right vocalizations to match Mendes' ... Read More:

...BUT...do not mistake the confused listing details on this item to mean you are buying a movie with Whoopi Goldberg in it! She is in a TV series of the same name but NOT in this movie. This item is the DVD of the movie.
The movie is very good indeed. The only reason for the 4 stars (not the full five) is that I wanted it to be perfect but the acting and directing sometimes lets it down - but I am nit picking! It is great really and certainly one I recommend to everyone at any given opportunity!
