OK, it's 1964, and Bebop has come a long way. We are six years after Coltrane recorded Kind of Blue with Miles, and it would be another five years before Miles records the next milestone: In A Silent Way. Tunes seem to be getting longer and longer...and with A Love Supreme John Coltrane finally produces a recording that gives himself free rein to really explore the furthest recesses from seed ideas, and just go with them. This is a very spiritual album, there seem to be no constraints.
Most of the four tunes begin with a basic theme, which is quickly jettisoned as Coltrane's creative juices start to flow.
There are some astounding sections on this CD, the musicians almost seem to be jostling for position at the mic, and yet they ... Read More:

Octogenarian? Impossible! Tony Bennett teams up with current stars to delight with well-loved standards and a few which were new to me. How many times must he have sung "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" in his career? It must be in the hundreds. Yet it still comes out fresh from the Master. His duet with George Michael on "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" shows his voice has lost nothing over the years. It brought a tear to my eye. A beautiful album.

The most prominent feature of this set is Gershwin's historic recordings of "Rhapsody In Blue" and "An American In Paris", but the remaining 45 tracks draw on a wide range of both American and British performers to produce a wide spectrum of classic interpretations. Whispering Jack Smith, Hutch, Jack Hylton, Roy Fox, Jack Simpson and Carroll Gibbons are all represented, as are Ella, Bing, and Billie, to name but a few. This really is a superb compilation.

This is an album that I came to fairly late (in relative terms), having heard DJ Jazzy Jeff use elements of 'Change (Makes You Want To Hustle)' and 'Places And Spaces' in the track 'A Touch Of Jazz'. Having liked the short pieces Jeff used it was relatively easy to find out what the tracks were and this naturally led to wanting to hear more of Donald Byrd. That eventually led me to this album.
This is Jazz-Funk at its very best, and as other reviewers have indicated, the production work of the Mizzel Brothers stands out. Jazz purists might be tempted to scoff at the notion of this strange hybrid, a fusion of Jazz, Funk and other elements of popular Black music, but for listeners seeking 'the groove' this album will draw you in through its sheer listenability and ... There have been quite a few bad reviews about this album, but having read them and still brought the album and listened to it myself, I'm not sure what they were listening to but I don't think it was this. I love this album, especially, Suggs, George Harrision, Mark Knopfler and J-Kay but not a single track disappoints. A really enjoyable album to relax to or dance to try it for yourself and make your own decision.

This was the first Coltrane record I bought after seeing it offer. Well being called 'The Very Best of' I was expecting too much, but this isn't just hyperbole. A great selection of tracks and really stand out performances too (best version of 'My Favorite Things' I've heard).
Certainly a great introduction to the trane, highly accessible. I wouldn't consider myself a connoisseur of the genre, by any stretch, but I imagine this would be a worth while purchase to the more seasoned listeners too.

"Big Swing Face" is one of Buddy's more popular albums, and I would certainly describe it as a classic. I first heard Buddy Rich when I was a kid when an older cousin of mine played me some of his LPs. Needless to say, I was mesmerised, and spent the next four decades of my life as a drummer.
This CD version also contains tracks that are not on the original LP release, which I still own. Even today, this recording remains one of my all-time favourite Rich albums. You can really feel the atmosphere of the gig, and the band just groove so well. His music crossed categories, and attracted a huge audience, and even if you're not into jazz, or drumming for that matter, you will love this album.
I was fortunate enough to see the Buddy Rich Big Band on two ... Read More:

When I first heard this CD I thought there were some similarities to Jan Garbarek's "Officium". There is contemporary/classical feel to the collection which works extremely well. The clarity and purity Aimee Green's soprano voice is stunning and "Mortal Flesh" which was the original reason I purchased the CD, is splendid and the layering and simplicity of the music behind her voice is superb.
As a lover of classical music generally, this album worked very well for me. Equally, my husband, who is a jazz lover, liked it too for the saxaphone playing. I would think there is something in this collection to suit almost every music lover's taste.
