I love Billie Holiday and have for a long time.
Her voice haunts my soul every time I hear it, it reminds me of the first time I heard it in a cafe in Soho London, time seem to stand still as she sang "Strange Fruit".
This box set is a perfect start to her music and you can see the all other music from jazz to hip hop flowing through it, if you have never heard her sing then I plead with you to buy this boxset and start a journey that will take you to new highs.
A good start to female jazz vocals and from the queen herself.

If you love these "black" rhythms (soul, blues, country), you will enjoy this cd; this album is very delightful, sensitive, beautiful, introspective... and personal; you can hear this album in a midnight show, with candle lights, with somebody who's in love with you in a romantic place inside and the effect will be magic... Pure "Plastic Soul, Man" (as Paul McCartney said on "Beatles Anthology 2"), I bought this album and I listened it many times without get bored... It's symply marvelous, a wonderful piece of Norah's work.
Enjoy the piano, enjoy the acoustic guitars, enjoy the drums, enjoy Norah's voice...ENJOY ALL!!!

A 'best of' was always going to be a compromise from such a prolific artist. However, one of the really good things about this album is that it was simultaneously released on vinyl and it sounds simply magnificent. All of you that bought the CD - confine it to the car and buy a proper audio medium. Vinyl was made for Ms Krall's sublime voice. What's also great is that many of these tracks were not previously released on vinyl and to hear 'Peel me a grape' 'East of the Sun' 'Look of love' and others in their full glory is a real treat. A great album from a rare and truly talented artist, buy without hesitation. One other point, I take issue with others comments about Girl in the other room, yes her husbands inability to write a coherent song has always been ... Read More:

Stacey Kent's highly polished albums of standards are extremely listenable if at times over-glossed tributes to the genius of the Great American Songbook. I have always had a few reservations about this particular musician, but on this new album I have to say I am completely won over. The unique feature of this project is, of course, the addition of four very evocative and melodic original songs by saxophonist/hubby Jim Tomlinson and lyrics by Kazuo Ishiguro. These songs are quite literally tailor-made for Kent's brand of reticent romanticism, and her singing on these numbers has a special personal quality. Sometimes her albums of standards have the feeling of a production line (though, admittedly, a very expert production line); these new songs prompt ... Read More:

I bought this album after reading the rave reviews on Amazon. One reviewer has said it is better than Better than Miles Davis' 'Kind Of Blue' and John Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme'. Quite a statement. So does it live up to the hype? In short NO. For me there's nothing ground breaking here, just lots of repetitive noise. Never once was I completely drawn into the music. To fair there are a couple nice tracks on this album (And Relax and Diabolus). But to mention Cinematic Orchestra in the same breath as Jazz greats like Miles Davis and John Coltrane is insane! No actually its insulting. Can you honestly say this album can match the emotion and sheer genius of "Kind of Blue"?? Its a generous 3 stars from me ....

These are the best of the Booker T & MGs recording from 1968 to 1972, after their succesful Atlantic career. Time is tight, Soul limbo and Melting pot were the huge hits with a more funky and outspoken sound. The other instrumentals vary from good to excellent (great versions of Born under a bad sign, Something, Mrs. Robinson) except for the weak vocals on Johnny I love you. This is the one to buy after the Atlantic Best Ofs.

A couple of other reviewers have hinted that this is easily the equal of 'Aja', and rightly so. It may even better it.
As soon as you start describing 'Gaucho' (and indeed 'Aja' and 'The Royal Scam') as jazz-influenced albums there's a big risk of losing your audience. It's excrutiatingly well produced, for sure. The arrangements are exquisite. But it's all about the songs, dude. 'Gaucho' imagines an unfeasibly exotic American dystopia and sets it to music. Kind of like 'Hotel California' but with better chord changes and more expensive session players. The coolest of the cool. And then some.

There have been numerous 'Best Of George Benson' compilations over recent years, none of which have been all-inclusive (that is a probable marketing ploy). This re-packaged selection continues the trend; having said that, it does serve as a pleasing introduction to the superb fusion jazz/R&B/pop that Mr Benson serves up masterfully.
