Astrud Gilberto made a name for herself when she fortuitously sang on the 1964 US Top 5 smash "The Girl From Ipanema". This association with jazz and bossa nova godfathers brought her a lot of flak from critics quick to dismiss her "artless singing style" and "limited vocal range".
However, to the music listeners who succumbed to her vocal charms - and I sure am one of them - the most important aspect of Astrud Gilberto's singing was her ability to get the most out of everything song she performed. As a bonus, her music greatly benefitted from sumptuous Brazilian cum U. S. orchestrations.
Her honey-voiced delivery is forever able to transport me to warm summer days lazily spent relaxing on the beach of distant and warm faraway ... Read More:

A stunning showcase of Hubbard's talents. For someone so young this serves as an excellent taste of what he was to become. His ranging, harmonic and sometimes downright belligerant style has always entranced me. For me this is his greatest record as a leader, the younster setting out to show eveyone what he has to offer. This record is littered with those characteristic barnstorming solos and his ability of more subtle playing on,"But Beautiful." There's a bit of everything on this from the skipping, jumpy, Horace Silveresque,"Gypsy Blue," to the classy sophisticated,"One mint Julep." Tina Brook's title track really swings. Brook's career disappeared into nothing beacause of his heroin addiction, this record shows what a wasted talent he was ... Read More:

Have to disagree with the other reviewer, as this isn't actually that bad. There's 4 CDs of Salsa/Cuban/Latin music of slightly differing moods (Latin Cool, Late night Latin, Latin for Lovers and Salsa Dance Classics) and although it sounds a bit cheesy and some of the tracks are by the same artist (presumably as a commercial cover band) which does make you tend to avoid these CDs, actually they are quite good and each of the CDs are great to put on. Admittedly this wouldn't be a CD you'd recommend as your only entree into the world of Salsa and it's not going to cut the mustard in a London club, but it's great to stick on for an evening or Sunday afternoon just to put a bit of latin background to your house - and for that it does the job well. I've ... Read More:

It's easy to be over-critical on albums. Yeah, the damn language barrier means I miss out on any lyrical brilliance &, yeah, this isn't varied enough & has a fairly throwaway instrumental track, yet there's something so subtly glorious about hearing João Gilberto every so often (both the person & the album). Just a man, his guitar & the most delicate of percussive backdrops. Sometimes bores me, other times makes me wonder why I bother listening to any other artists; always great background music if nothing else, and I mean that in the most sincere way possible.
As a side note, I've heard many people say that this is the absolute, ultimate, completely flawless classic in bossa nova, so perhaps you should go with them instead. ... Read More:

It took me a while to warm to this release after First Circle, and it wasn't till I read an interview with Pat that I bagan to understand why. First Circle had been very much about perfecting, to a point, the uniquely sophisticated symphonic composition aspect of the Metheny/Mays writing partnership. This album, by comparison, was compositionally more straightforward and provided Metheny with a chance to get back to his guitar improvisational roots.
Not that there is no compositional ambition to the album. The leading track, 'Minuano', includes a very harmonically challenging Synth/Marimba counterpoint break, but the song is just a hugely powerful whoop of delight that frames an immaculate Metheny guitar solo.
