Banhart raised a few eyebrows upon the release of his "Oh Me Oh My" full length last year. It showed an immense talent singing songs onto, at best, a broken 4-track recorder and, at worst, an answer machine. Here is his second release, "The Black Babies" EP, and it is basically more of the same - it gives the same indication of greatness but no development from the stance that so enchanted me all those months ago.
With a couple of tracks from the previous album included on the 8 tracks here, it may hint at being more for collectors than a real introduction to the man. But even so it is still an inspiring collection of songs, "Bluebird" is typical Banhart, sounding slightly lethargic and slow whilst churning out some frankly bizarre ... Read More:

This release puts their second and third album on one CD; confusingly so in reverse order, but then "Barnaby, Hardly Working" is truly a better opening track than "Clunk".
If you're a fan of late YLT, you may either appreciate or dislike this record's rawness; just be warned that there are a number of people who would easily call this their favourite (I wouldn't, that verdict goes to "Painful", but I daresay you won't be disappointed).

After the '69 Love Songs' box set surprised/delighted/entertained and moved me on a regular basis for oh... seems like forever, I decided to delve deeper into the MF back catalogue.
This was the first I bought (hoping for more like 'Papa was a Rodeo') and whilst initially I was a little disappointed - The majesty of 'I have the Moon' and 'Two Characters...' soon won my heart.
Having now bought the remainder, I'd recommend 'The Wayward Bus' as the next must have, but face it - in the end you're going to want to buy them all.

'The Creek Drank The Cradle' is the sweet, melodic album written, performed, produced and recorded at home by Sam Beam. One reviewer here gave this CD a low star rating (which is entirely his prerogative) because of the poor recording quality, but I tend to feel that this element actually adds to the album. The raw, stripped back nature of the recording compliments the songs perfectly. The feel of one man and his guitar, sat in his living room, is completely captivating. The songs are spare and yet hold you spellbound throughout. A simple, beautiful album that is great to sit back to and let your cares slip away. Highly recommended. If you like this, check out 'The Pull' by Kreg Viesselman, another beautiful album of a similar ilk.

The second album from Portland's excellent lesser-known three piece The Thermals, the album title tells you more or less everything you need to know about this album - it goes straight for the jugular with no messing about.
Playing what they describe as No-Fi and sounding like a brutal mash of emo-tinged punk and no-name (stuff like The Parkinsons, Ikara Colt etc. spring to mind), it is rare that Hutch Harris and the gang write a song over 3 minutes in length. True to form, the average length of a track on this album clocks in at under 2 and a half minutes. The opening track doesn't even make it to that: 'Our Trip' clocks in at just under two minutes. Featuring one of the best lines on the album ("it's our trip.. and we're not listening!"), ... Read More:

This is a great album. It combines elements of lo-fi indiefolk with post rock and wraps it up in a summer haze. The record can cheer you up on a bad day and imediatly captures images of summers long gone. At the same time it is quiet and reflective, fiercely experimental but somehow never sad. Fans of lou barlow, smog, graham coxon and even post rock acts like savath+savalas find an album to treasure here

Yo La Tengo are a national treasure to the United States of America. Their quality of output would be comparable to our very own (well Scotland's) Belle and Sebastian, although their styles aren't really the same, other than maybe Season of the Shark.
A brilliant, underground, lo fi, indie rock three piece that have provided us with some of the best albums ever especially since 1993.
This album contains a good cross section of their music from 1986 to their Summer Sun album. Although if you love this you will still have a treasure trove of studio albums to examine also. Their live performances are not to be missed either. They have an excellent sense of humour, including (taking the rip) synchronised dance routines to at least ... Read More:
