The most refreshing music i have heard in a decade beautiful and thoughtful lyrics and beautiful music arrangements. This cd is a must have. Glasgow, Scotland.

This box set contains the first four GBV albums and a bonus CD containing outtakes, unavailable elsewhere, from 1988-1993. If you're reading this you're probably already a GBV fan. If not, this isn't the place to start: try Universal Truths and Cycles instead for a good intro. For GBV fans keen to explore the band's origins though understandably cautious of the box set price tag, this can be recommended. This is the really early stuff, before they hit it big (in an indie-rock way) with Propeller. Someone once described listening to GBV as like discovering the greatest radio station in the world and that's the impression this box gives. The first two albums, Devil Between My Toes and Sandbox, are, in a lot of ways, unremarkable. Their ... Read More:

From the blindingly beautiful opener "On Fire" to the blistering punk/grunge of many of (co-writer)Lowenstein's numbers, this album just about covers every base in the lo-fi/U.S. indie book, and does it with style. If you're the kinda person who relishes the heart-on-your-sleeve tactics of Evan Dando, but also revels in the sheer adrenaline rush of two-minute punk-ish workouts, then this album comes very highly recommended.

In years to come, Dave Longstreth will be a hugely admired maverick songwriter and people will wonder where they were in the early days when his first few albums were released...
Well, you're here, and Longstreth's here. Now.
Longstreth blew me away with his voice, his unfettered approach to songwriting, his musicality, his arrangements (his new album SLAVES, GRAVES AND BALLADS was recorded in a gym with an orchestra and it sounds incredible).
He's about as good as Kingfisher's are at getting fish.

On the surface, Ween's "The Pod" is a shambling mis-matched mockery of music, and on my first listen, I felt disgusted that I had wasted my money on such trash. A few months later, with all but one of the tracks stagnant in my memory, I gave The Pod another go. This paranoid, uneasy collage of bad smells and nauseating food, wasn't for the entertainment of the listener, but exclusively for Ween themselves. You start to realise The Pod is much like that Zappa album you only managed to crack 30 years later; you just didn't understand the broad concept at the time. Given, the album does have a very shaky start, The Pod version of Sorry Charlie just doesn't cut it next to a live session, as do the accompanying opening tracks. Doctor Rock is distinctively ... This CD is awesome, I love the catchy wohs on Beginning is only the beginning. Each track is slightly different. Thisis not a one sound band. The only thing I would say is you have to give it a few listens before its brilliance is realised. Finally, the best thing is that these guys are even better live than on CD, and this album is SO good!
Release Date September 18, 2000
This is one for the hardcore Beck fan, if you like Odelay and Mellow Gold, you'll probably enjoy this, but if the more accoustic, mellow beck of Mutations and Sea Change is your cup of tea you may not enjoy it so much.
Release Date October 22, 2007
I find this album stunningly emotional, deeply moving and musically captivating. If you like folk with a more beautifully subtle experiemental edge, with glorious harmonies and wonderful guitar and percussion then this is for you - if you're not sure, try it anyway. And if you have the chance, see this man live: it will change your life.
Try, and enjoy. I hope it effects you as much as it did, and still does, me.
