Bought from my local independent shop two weeks ago and I must admit I really didn't like it.....nothing stood out, seemed boring.....but after 10 plays it becomes a pastoral, yearning, summer days epic..... Bit Flaming Lips, bit Grandaddy, bit Wilco, bit Fleetwood Mac.....
Tremendous......but dont play it to your friends expecting them to like it...

In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, Neutral Milk Hotel's second album is an album I came to a couple of years ago through the volume of spectacular reviews a came across. Clearly this wasn't the usual over-hyped rock-lite fluff.
Everyone said it was magnificent. Everyone was right.
The difficulty is, I've not come across someone who's really put their finger on why it's so great.
For me, it's the passion with which Jeff Mangum delivers the guitar and vocals. He plays like his life depends on it. Maybe he needed to write the greatest album ever, and this is what came out?
The songs generally stick to a lo fi folky style including backing from a range of strings and brass, with a couple of diversions into ... Read More:

The book of love is long and boring and i'm sure ......heavy. This 3cd set dealing with all matters of the heart is much shorter, much more fun, easy to pack and incredibly enlightening and essental listening for any poor soul setting out on the long rocky road that is ......LOVE and all that lies therein.

I guess it's only fitting that, having already essentially kept post-rock alive in difficult times, the eastern Canadian scene would break out of that ghetto and into the larger indie-rock, er, ghetto. And it's not much of a surprise either that the result is simply epoch-making. It's no exaggeration to say that, in another 12 years, people will talk about this in the same hushed tones as they do about MBV's Loveless today - provided that they don't already, which they should.
For this second album, BSS extended from a duo to a ten-piece "official ensemble", with a further 15 or so 'guests' on various tracks. While that debut was a largely ambient affair, this covers everything. There's Tortoisey undertones on 'Pacific Theme', brushed-snare folkiness on 'I'm Still ... Read More:

Although I'm more into rock and metal and this is more acoustic it was still an enjoyable listen. The best track on there is probably Superman and is the famous hilight. The others were quite good but this CD definetly isn't for everyone.

'Our Endless Numbered Days' is another beautiful album from Iron & Wine. It is along the same lines as 'The Creek Drank The Cradle', but where as that album was one man and his guitar, this album creates the same feel with more musicians and instruments. Saying that, it still has that bare, open and melodious feel to it, just augmented in all the right places. This is great to sit back and drift away to, the music washes over you and makes you engage with it. Like all the albums, it gets better with repeated listening and this will soon become another integral part of your music listening life. Well worth a try.

Mutations is Beck's most melodious and accessible album, but that doesn't mean he's copped out. Beck is a sponge - yet to settle down into a style of his own, but absorbing influences from all everywhere, and fashioning his own versions of them all.
Although the pundits appear to think this album occupies the semi-acoustic rock territory ruled by REM etc, to me it feels mainly rooted in the 70s - think Led Zep and you have the sitar & hurdy-gurdy laden second track 'Nobody's fault but my own' , mix in Lindisfarne's blokiness and you have 'Bottle of blues'. In between you have some pure C&W in 'Cancelled check', bossanova fun in 'Tropicalia', and a waltz Tom Waits would be proud of in 'Sing it again'.
But there are still more gems - 'Diamond Bollo**s' has a wonderful 60s ... Read More:

I used to have an art teacher who sported a magnificent mustache and extremely long "luxurious" hair. In order to create a stimulating working environment in his art classes, he used to put this album on. After two or three lessons I was hooked. I had to get my own copy. The rest, as they sometimes say, is history. That was seven years ago, when I was twelve or thirteen, and I think all of the music I've since took an interest in can in some way be traced back to this album. This was the "Big Bang" of my obsession with music. If it weren't for Ok Computer, I'd refer to it as my "favourite album of all time".
Listening to it now the amount of absolutely essential tracks is staggering. I could write essays on every single song here...but I won't. Instead I'll just mention that Stone on ... Read More:

Los Campesinos! are a seven-piece (four boys and three girls) hailing from Cardiff. Their debut album Hold on Now Youngsters is an absolute indie party riot!
The album is full of perfectly sculpted indie classics. The highly charged, energtic songs are witty, creative and in all honesty brilliant songs leap at you like that first pint of Lager after a long week at work, slap you hard in the face, smile, and invite you to join their party - riotous tunes from start to finish.
No one with an ounce of a music brain should go on any longer without listening to You! Me! Dancing! - definetly a cult classic. That would get even the most cynical of critic bopping up and down. Whilst no other song might be quite as amazing, the rest are still quirky, fast paced indie-pop hits then will make you ... Read More:
