Alexi Murdoch first major release is one of the most laid back and accomplished releases around. Most of the songs have been played in different TV series, so you may of already heard from him even if you don't realise. another great songwriter that's up there with the other modern greats like Jeff Buckley, Damien Rice, Thom Yorke, Ray Lamontagne and Willy Mason. Along with Jack Savoretti, Alexi Murdoch should be receiving alot more recognition. Not one bad track on the album. Best songs are

That's Not What I Heard

This album is fantastic, it's one of those that you can't sit still to! The best track is definately number 2 - Standing in the way of control. It's different to all the other sounds out at the moment which makes a nice change too. Would highly recommend it.

Jurado sticks to the same winning formula here that won him high praise for his previous album (one before last) 'Where shall you take me' (possibly the pinnacle of his career). This is, perhaps, his quietest album, but as with all of his songs they seep slowly into your conciousness and before long he's won you over...again.
These 13 tracks stay in the shadows, and Jurado is joined in a minimal way by cello, weeping piano, the odd patter of drums and female harmony. Songs remain sad recalling lost love, murder and infidelity, and bear similarity in style to Rosie Thomas' first two albums - ironically, she does not join him here. I've only just bought this issue and regret that I waited so long. The first disc which features the album and the EPs is consistently excellent, but the second disc, which I haven't investigated much yet, does not seem to be of the same standard as in the Crooked Rain set. The comparison by a reviewer here with the "white album" is justified. This album is notable for its variety and for consistent excellence. I've had the album before but have only now realized how consistently good it is. I would say it is their best album since the Westing by Musket collection. If you like Pavement this is essential.

Woke on a Whaleheart

I'm not mad about tracks 2 and 3, but the rest of this album is excellent. Different to previous Smog releases, but clearly a development from them in terms of Bill Callahan's masterful song writing. Kind of countryish with perfectly placed backing vocals and violin and Callahan's characteristic simple vocal delivery, this is a really great album.

Julian Cope has beliefs that are part of his being. They are deep and religious, and affect his life at every stage.

This album lets us into his personal mindset, beliefs and fantasies. It's a great ride.

It kicks off with Soul Desert and never looks back. Searching, in the modern world dominated by rigid religions and worship of single gods, for a belief that rings true. Crop circles, higher beings (maybe extra terrestrials), the inner life of the earth, and the people of old with their stone circles and undogmatic earth worship allow this album to rinse away the current century.

There really should be a national compulsory day-off for the whole nation when a Will Oldham record is released! Because they should be savoured, like a fine wine (which incidentally always goes well with an Uncle Will record)- hence the reason I buy them all on vinyl - a listening experience! He is the benchmark for all songwriters of our generation and he astounds with every record. And this one is a real grower, just like The Letting Go which crept up on you stealthily and threw you to the ground mercilessly and has never let go since! Long live the prince!

In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, Neutral Milk Hotel's second album is an album I came to a couple of years ago through the volume of spectacular reviews a came across. Clearly this wasn't the usual over-hyped rock-lite fluff.

Everyone said it was magnificent. Everyone was right.

The difficulty is, I've not come across someone who's really put their finger on why it's so great.

For me, it's the passion with which Jeff Mangum delivers the guitar and vocals. He plays like his life depends on it. Maybe he needed to write the greatest album ever, and this is what came out?
