I have been listening to Sinatra for about 50 years and I still LISTEN to him and I still occasionally find something new in the way he treats a song. I saw him in concert four times! His phrasing and his ability to sing so much with a single breath ( he swam underwater to improve this )were tools that he used with such effect.There have been many people who emulated him but no-one who came anywhere near him, as this collection shows very plainly.

10,000hz Legend

I've only just got round to buying 10'000HZ Legend, but I'm so glad I did.
This album is a slight departure from Moon Safari. This is more experimental, darker, and somewhat inconsistent in places. Therefore; in my opinion; not every track works. However, the ones that do - work extremely well and there are some great moments here.

"Electronic Performers" opens the album well, it's a Kraftwerk-esque electronic bleeps and beats with electronically processed vocals. But for me; by far the best track on the album; is "How does it make you feel?". This "pink floyd-ish" track drifts in beautifully, with wonderful lyrics giving a sense of bleak loneliness.

Premiers Symptomes

Since "Premiers Symptomes" means "first symptoms," it's appropriate that it's the name of Air's collection of early singles. This French duo created a warm sweep of electronica that sounded like a complete , which is only marred by two funky, rather awkward songs pasted on to the end.

"Modular Mix" kicks it off -- a dreamy song that sounds like the soundtrack for an underwater movie. "Casanova 70" and the languid "Les Professionals" add a lounge-y sound. And "J'Ai Dormi Sous L'Eau" and "Le Soleil Est Près de Moi" are sweet and slow , almost like a pair of trip-hop lullabies.

I hadn't really heard any of Air's previous work before I watched 'The Virgin Suicides' but after hearing the haunting soundtrack and the eerie melodies that were so fitting to the film I just had to go out and buy this. It is captivating within itself and is an album that truly makes you think. As a soundtrack it works very well as it is filled with haunting tracks that just make you want to listen again and again.

It will take you back to poignant times in your life and really make you think. I find the tracks so haunting and deep that while listening to them you can really reflect on your emotions and feelings. These Foolish Things

Before David Bowie, before John Lennon, Elvis Costello, Paul Weller and so on and so on tried it, Bryan Ferry cut loose from his art-school, avant-garde rock career with Roxy Music to lay down what were viewed at the time, deeply uncool cover versions of songs such as "It's My Party" and "These Foolish Things". It didn't go down too well at the time and, to be fair, it doesn't match up to some of his later, more trademark recordings. But it is an interesting collection all the same, leading off with a wonderfully kitsch cover of Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall", where Ferry outleers even himself in his vocal posturing. "The Tracks Of My Tears" is nice, as is "God Only Knows", and, to this day, his cut of "These Foolish Things" makes it into my top fifty tracks ... Read More:

The Essential Barry Manilow

Having first bought his music when I was 13 in the 70's it was great to have most of his best loved songs on one CD now that my tapes and records have worn out. For those of you who love Barry this CD is fantastic, with 34 songs all wonderfully produced. He still does it for me after all these years.

Manilow: Greatest Hits, The Platinum Collection

Although this album has a number of great tracks on it (Mandy, Tryin' to get the Feeling Again, I made It Through the Rain), there are some odd choices as well (I'm Your Man - Remix). Could It Be Magic is a remix and although inpressive, it doesn't have the staying power of the original. Even the great Copacabana is the 1993 remix and not the superior original.
If you are looking for the definitive Manilow collection, I would recomend getting The Songs 1975-1990, which is just stunning.

Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely

Frank Sinatra was never the least self-pitying singer of all time, which I guess is why he appeals to men of a certain age. 'Only the Lonely' has a freakishly horrible cover (I can't believe it won a Grammy, full marks to Amazon for pointing that out, he looks like Wallace Shawn, for goodness' sake) but the contents are pure gold. Sinatra's voice was never better, and this collection of late-night why-did-she-leave-me standards is one of the finest and most emotionally direct things he ever did. The high point is probably the majestically dejected 'One For My Baby', a maudlin song which Sinatra invests with all the sadness, regret and longing of somebody who no longer gets to go to bed with Ava Gardner.
