This magnificent album combines the wonderful talents of Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello together to create something completely unique. Sure from the opening notes its clear who has had a bigger influence on the music (Bacharach) but Costello's input both lyrically and in some fantastic vocal performances is not to down-played.
Bacharach's background as one one of the finest popular songwriters needs no introduction. However the journey that Costello has taken from 70's new-wave angry young man to frankly all-round musical chameleon is amazing. He's now married to a Jazz Pianist, reads music and has written his own classical music - including the score! At the time of this recording Costello was halfway through this transitional ... Bryan Ferry launched his solo career during the first flush of Roxy Music's fame. As some members played on his solo recordings, one must assume his dual role did not cause undue friction within the band. After the space-age art rock avant-gardity of Roxy Music, the musical direction of Bryan Ferry's first solo albums was something of a surprise, ranging from Billie Holiday's My Foolish Things (the title track of her first album) to Bob Dylan's A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall, Dobie Gray's The In Crowd and the Platters' Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, all of which were extracted as singles. It was a long way from Virginia Plain and Pyjamarama.
The album Let's Stick Together came out in 1976 in time to capitalize on the success of the single it was named ... Read More:

Truly the best of the albums, when Barry was at the peak of his career. As he says "I write the songs that make the young girls cry". He can certainly make this old girl cry with renditions of "If I Should Love Again" and "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again". The favourites, Copacabana, Mandy etc are all there.
If there's one album you should have in your collection it should be this one!

Easy listening! Cool Hammond mixes with ultra tight sixties rhythm sections. Rare unearthed gems revived by Paul Tunkin, DJ at now legendary Blow Up Nights.
There is a distinct undercurrent of tackiness, in a Mike Flowers way, with many of these tunes, but their naive exuberance dissolves any cynicism in the listener.
There are some superb tunes here, Move Move Move, by Alan Parker and Alan Hawksure is an effervescent chirpy, Hammond led ditty, with echoes of Keith Emerson, a perfect opener to start on a high note.
Track 2 Delhi Discotheque does what it says on the tin...big arrangement with Sitar. Imagine those sixties British films and TV series where girls in mini skirts and scooter riding men in cravats gyrate to in a slightly stiff stylised ... Read More:

The only music that I had heard from Brian Ferry was his 1984 album Girls and Boys, which is the best 80s album I have heard. I was expecting something at least vaguely similar or showing the same kind of great atmosphere and great songwriting, but instead this is boring, unemotive, and forgettable light-rock. Don't listen to this review if you already know what the music is like and happen to be an admirer of that sort of music, but as a warning for anyone having heard Ferry's amazing 1980s album 'Boys and Girls', this may as well not be the same person. There is nothing that I find remotely engauging in this album. It is the worst CD I have, (and wish I didn't have).

Despite the title, this is actually a greatest hits collection in all but name - not really surprising as Engelbert was a balladeer. It contains all but two of his UK hits together with Quando quando quando and a fine selection of covers. The two missing UK hits (My Marie, Love is all) didn't make the top thirty and their omission is not important to UK fans.
At this point, I should add that Engelbert was less successful in the American singles charts although Release me made the top five and After the lovin' (which didn't chart in the UK and is not included here) made the top ten in America. A different compilation, Ultimate collection, released in America by Hip-O, may suit American listeners better as it includes After the lovin' and other American hits ... Read More:

I bought this album originally in the 70's when it was released as an obscure piece of vinyl on the basis of This is Tomorrow, I never expected to like let alone enjoy the rest of the songs on here which really surprised me. I find it a shame that he never persued some of the style brought to life on these tracks and have only ever made this the solitary album in my collection by Ferry. Worth a listen for sure and more.

This has me singing in the shower for almost 20 years. A friend had a copy at school and I kept singing the songs for years afterwards, finally caving in and realising I had to have a copy myself. If you like a good melody, treat yourself - I don't think you'll regret it.
The songs are mainly big band numbers with Harry soaring above in a playful, soulful one-man vocal party, although on a couple of tracks he contents himself with just tinkling on the ivories. His arrangements suit his voice perfectly, with the band giving it everything and before Harry's glorious, surging, crooning character takes over.
And I do feel, after listening to this album more times than I care to remember, that the thing that makes it special is that it's really alive and ... Read More:
