Train Above the City is the most controversial Felt album; controversial, obviously for those who have heard of it, and I can't imagine there are many. Felt are one of the most overlooked bands of the 1980's and of all time, and this, their 9th album, is unlike anything else they'd ever released. All of their other albums do have a distinctive sound that makes each its own, but all of them are quintessentially Felt. This on the other hand, doesn't sound anything like Felt. Now I have no problem with bands moving in directions so far away from their norm that it doesn't resemble what made people fall for them in the first place, but if ... Read More:

Being considered one of the greatest bass players in the history of jazz (alongside Blanton, Mingus and very few others), Brown had a great rapport with many pianists. This CD is, however, an interesting combination of a current colaborator (Green), an old pal (Peterson), some new forces Brown was always so eager to promote (Moroni, Keezer) and a respected veteran he allegedly hadn't worked with previously (Jamal). They are all allegedly friends with Brown, but it is the music that interests us here, not their friendship.
It is the latter pianist (Ahmad Jamal) who kicks this great album off with some really imaginative and often surprising playing based upon Milt Jackson's "Bags'Grove".
Jamal actually merges Jackson-style ... Read More:

The clearance issue here clearly dents this box set especially near the end where there are some stunning omissions. Like it says in the accompanying book most R&B and hip hop coexisted as one and in many ways this is how the cds pan out. Yet there is no real evolution of how we got todays R&B and one gets a sense that more time was spent putting together the early stuff than the most recent stuff (currently the biggest selling genre in the name of Beyonce and Justin Timberlake). Case in point is the absence of MJ's Billie Jean: a mystery! So if you're an R&B you'll be pleased with Mary J blige's appearance but gobsmacked as too why there is no Salt N Pepa nor TLC. Hopefully it was a clearance problem and nothing more than that. That no doubt ... Read More:

While this is a good album for me it does not come close to my two favourite of Metheny's trio albums "Rejoicing" or "Bright Size Life". Having said this, I would regard "Rejoicing" as one the greatest jazz guitar trio albums ever recorded - it is a magnificent and inspiring piece of work. "Bright Size Life" is a very early one for Metheny and includes the wonderful Jaco Pastorius on bass. This latest offering, while good, has to my mind little of the energy and inspiration of these two, and also of "Question and Answer", the other brilliant guitar trio album. However in fairness to Pat, how many brilliant albums can we expect him to make?
