I listened to CD 1 and that was enough for me. When are MOS going to learn that they cant keep cranking out rubbish like this year upon year? (Well since 2001 anyway!) Give me the best tunes of the year and decent remixes on Vinyl and I will make the Annuals for you? how does that sound?
Release Date January 28, 2008
I would tend to agree with the other more critical review of this compilation, am just giving it another listen through since I got it way back at the beginning of the year. The first cd is really the only one with any sense of direction, with some nice foot tapping ebbs and flows. The second cd is a perfect cd after a night out with some nice classics, but a little too slow for my liking, the third is more of the same, and dare I say it, verging on tedium.
Unfortunately with it being a big label release, most of the tracks ( on the first cd in particular) feel a bit dated. Its a nice overview of some pretty good tracks from the previous year but nothing more. The second and third cds seem a bit like some of the more relaxed sets I have ... Read More:

Ministry of Sound has come along way since its origins in the early 90's. In fact, it literally has - their albums seem so far away from the famous club that it no longer resembles any relevance or any connection to the place that was once 'the' place to go to. Luckily, I own The Annual Vol.1 to remind of 'back in the day'...
If it's not special enough to just own this piece of history, then its lovely dark royal blue leather book-case will surely make you feel special. I would describe it as 'innocent' - the label MoS wasn't even recognised worldwide by the time this album was released. And just looking at this plain blue cover shows how un-commercial the club, and indeed the album was back then. It has a sense of pride with its silver lettering, ... Read More:

A nice album overall, though nothing 'amazing' really. Cd1 has a particularly mixed theme, with soothing songs such as Les Nuits, or the lovely No Ordinary Morning (wow). Cd2 has more of a beat, but the rhythms are still quite bliss.
Good album, though for me, the best chill out album money can buy is Chilled Euphoria...
Release Date June 11, 2007
An absolutely cracking album containing slick mixing and some banging tunes. If you are looking for an album to listen to before going out or having a house party then this is the one for you. Forget your Cream and MOS annual mixes they simply dont compare to this.

Oh dear, oh dear. It really does seem like the Ministry of Sound label have lost their way. There was a time when they released quality dance compilations such as the 'Sessions' series. But now, it just seems that they are content on cashing in on any scene or re-vive fad, and their latest release 'Back to the Old Skool' is a prime example of this.
'Old Skool' music may have different interpretations, but I suspect for the majority this genre recalls those songs that defined white gloves, light sticks and dance music of the early 90's. The album has the usual anthems of this time, like 'Set you free' by N-Trance, and Liquid's 'Sweet Harmony', along with the odd forgotten gem such as Cola Boy's '7 ways to love'.

All credit to all concerned (particularly Alan Bremner who Mixed and Engineered the thing), this is an enjoyable mix of old house classics, many of which if you'll probably have on vinyl or whatever (if you're old and ugly enough!). Alan's Leftfield and Young MC mash up on CD1 is definitely a highlight for me.

It's like all music albums/bands in life, they never reach their peak without making an average or poor album. In MoS' case, this probably is their most 'average album between the 1995-2000 era, before what I call the 'kids albums' era. But as a previous reviewer said, it's still better than the stuff being pumped out now.
Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad album at all. I think I was just a bit suprised to hear it sounded alot more mellow and dull than the other 90's albums, but 1997 did have a very unique theme, and this album captures a mix of the dark acid house sounds (the excellent Somethin' goin on), with some good summer tracks (Like Sunchyme). I found Cd1 the most enjoyable, as it kept the house music and really captured 'that' sound.
