When I first saw matisyahu performing youth and king without a crown via the web I was blown away by his presence and songcraft, listening 2 this album was one of the biggest anti-climaxes 4 me ever and I have a feeling it is due 2 label pressure 2 release a substandard work. In truth there are a handful of killer tracks but the rest is messy utopian drivel and I hate to say so because i know this act are the real deal and I have a suspicion there next release will prove me right. gr8 singles, dire album

Play Me: The Complete Uni Studio Recordings...Plus!

It may be argued that Neil Diamond has not been himself for some years now. If you don't believe me listen to these three discs (comprising all 6 of his earliest MCA studio albums) and you will be convinced of Mr Diamond's sparkling beginings. Skip the derisible "The Pot Smoker's Song" and the hokey "Knackelflerg" on Disc 1, and you are left with 69 tracks of sheer excellence.
Apart from some of the classics, that all Diamond fans know and love, there are some lesser known gems - "Juliet" is a lovely, well paced love song as is "Hurtin' You Don't Come Easy"
Disc 2 contains the wonderful "African Trilogy" a full sweeping mini rock opera that shows just how brave and experimental Diamond once was (and to be fair, still is in his live performances).

Found this gem while looking for something else entirely. The Penguin Café are new to me - but not their music. You'll recognise Telephone and Rubber Band from a well known advert and I've heard Music for a Found Harmonium a thousand times without knowing who it was by.

This is a wonderful compilation and a great introduction to PCO's music, some tracks date back to 1976 but it includes a great 1996 ORB remix Pandaharmonium.

The PCO was the brainchild of the English composer and multi-instrumentalist Simon Jeffes (1949-1997). You can read more about this fascinating band on www.penguincafe.com but the music speaks for itself.

The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring

This soundtrack is certainly a popular one today but in my opinion, highly overrated. When I saw the movie, I thought that the hobbit music was a standout but remembered little else and the same is true for the CD. It excels in atmosphere and size but (apart from the hobbit music) has very little character; something that I feel is essential in a soundtrack of this sort. If you're hoping to hear the 'Ring Theme' (which is repeated over and over in the first film), it appears only once on the CD and the Nazgul music is a little dominating and repetitive for just one disc (even though the choir does send a nice shiver down the spine). The best thing about this soundtrack is the fact it has given Howard Shore's profile a much-needed push and I hope he can return to top ... Read More:

Saul Williams

Okay, perhaps not for everyone's taste, but this is a refreshing antidote to the commercial mess that 'hip hop' has become. Along with The Coup, Dead Prez, Immortal Technique and a few others, Saul Williams has succeeded in resisting the tendency to 'sell out' (a rare accusation these days, as so many have done). Although I agree to a degree with the reviewer who criticised the 'unpolished' feel of some of the production, isn't that what hip hop was always about? If you are looking for a bubbly, idiotic, moronic corporate puppet, look elsewhere. If you are looking for intelligent, soulful hip hop, (and probably if, like me, you grew up with 1980s and early 1990s hip hop) you can't go wrong with this.

this is musical and literary art. there is no other way to describe it. each track is a tiny masterpiece and Jake Thackray's performances are genuinely remarkable on each.

and that's the whole review. you've either heard this man and appreciated his brilliant talent or you haven't. there is no way to do justice to him in 1000 words so 66 will have to do.
