There was a time when the art of monologue held quite a hallowed place in our culture, as evinced by such names as Gillie Potter, Sandy Powell and Joyce Grenfell. Stanley Holloway was born in East London, but assumed the persona of a northerner, having perfected the accent during the First World War through enlisting in a Yorkshire regiment. Avid has gathered together 35 of his classic monologues, spanning 1930 to 1941, together with dialogue with Sir Laurence Olivier from the soundtrack of the 1947 film "Hamlet", concluding with his two celebrated 1956 recordings as Alfred P Doolittle of the two songs from "My Fair Lady". As is usual with Avid, superb restoration coupled with generous running time has produced a tremendous bargain.

This is brilliant ! See What A Morning , Speak O Lord , Oh Church Arise , Beneath The Cross of Jesus , The Power Of The Cross and In Christ Alone and Accross The Land are meaningful & inspiring modern hymns . The truths that they express about the timeless love of God & how Christians must let that be reflected in their lives by following Christ are just amazing! The tunes are very good & they are sung to perfection by Mrs Getty . John Shuttleworth is a character created by comedian Graham Fellows and its hard to tell if he is a celebration of the common man or a gentle satire of him. Either way I've been a fan since I first heard him on BBC Radio 4. John Shuttleworth lives in West Yorkshire , probably Sheffield and for a hobby makes up songs on his Yamaha electronic organ that are both banal and sentimental with an eye for the detail of everyday life. I cringe at the sentiments but love his convincing depiction of the amiable character I might have met in the pub yesterday. John means well but somehow always gets the small picture on the big issues. We are called on to save the whale by eating more tuna chunks. If you're looking for a neat synopsis of Paul Weller's work you should definitely check this out.

This collection is great to use if you're looking for a particular track or period of his expansive career but working through the tracks is perhaps the best way to see how his work has developed over the decades.

His talent, & this collection, go deeper than the hits - if you're not too familiar with his work, this is pretty much essential listening; if you're already a fan, this is a "must have"!

Just fantastic.

The real stand out track on this great album for me is "The Old Green Iron Lamp", a truely beautiful and poignant song showing the side of Harding that "Bombers Moon" was to bring even more to the fore.

this is an excellent album - it had me laughing out loud and i'm still discovering new funny bits as i listen to it again. obviously the elements song is a must for any science teacher, which is why i bought the cd, but there's much more to it than just that song. the only odd thing is the repeated songs on the second half. but which album should i get next?

Mahler: Complete Symphonies

The late Klaus Tennstedt was a very great Mahler conductor and this set, in part, reflects that very well. Symphonies 3, 6 and 8 (and especially number 8) are right up with the very finest performances ever recorded. Symphonies 1, 2 and 4 are of a very high quality. Symphony 7 sounds fine until you hear the live BBC Legends recording (Mahler - Symphony No 7; Mozart - Symphony No 41 and you realise just how ALIVE a live Tennstedt performance can be (I know it costs almost as much as the complete set being reviewed here but please believe me, it is worth every penny!). As for symphonies 5 and 9 I personally find them rather four-square and unyielding. So on balance this is a very good set to buy as a super budget investment beating the Tabakov/Sophia ... Read More:
