Beer and Sex and Chips 'n' Gravy/Bitter Fit Crack

CD-Charts > Music > Miscellaneous
by: Macc Lads

Release Date April 21, 2008
From the town of Macclesfield in the early-80s came the infamous "Macc Lads", the crudest band in Christendom. As an example, the opening line of "Sweaty Betty" is
"She wore big knickers and she worked on't sewage farm" - and the lyrics go rapidly ruder from there on.

The Ladds' lyrics are set in a world where the mode of transport is either a Vauxhall Viva covered in rust or a no. 29 bus and everyone drinks 20 pints of Boddies on a Friday night. (Anyone who drinks halfs of lager, or washes their hair is distinctly suspect!).

Lyrics aside, for punk/metal this is musically quite a good album, and unlike many "novelty" records will bear repeated listening. The Beater's guitar riffs hold up well and of the 19 tracks ... Read More:

The Simpsons Sing The Blues

by: The Simpsons

Release Date March 20, 1999
This is the debut album from the pop cultural phenomenon with, amongst other things, its own star on the Hollywood walk of fame, THE SIMPSONS.
This album features 5 original Simpson's songs & 5 covers of classic blues songs, all sung in the inimitable Simpson's style.

1.DO THE BARTMAN - 5:11.
A number one hit co written by Michael Jackson!
2.SCHOOL DAY - 3:57.
A rockin' cover of Chuck Berry's song, featuring Bart Simpson and Buster Poindexter {David Johansen.}
3.BORN UNDER A BAD SIGN - 3:08.
Dan Castellaneta doing Homer Simpson doing Albert King!
4.MOANIN' LISA BLUES - 4:49.
My favourite line in this BLACK VELVET {Alannah Myles} sounding song is "I'm down so low, if I cheered up I'd still ... Read More:

Ambient Heaven - Sounds of the Forest

by: Howard Robert

Release Date March 03, 2008
I found this music to be tacky and poor quality in comparison with other CDs of this style. The title does not fit at all, there is nothing to put you in mind of forests and it could benefit from more natural sounds.

There are several CDs in the Ambient Heaven collection; I also bought "Dawn, which I found to be pleasant and definitely better than this one.

by: Edward Elgar

Release Date October 08, 2007
This box is worth buying for the Barbirolli disks alone (if you don't have them). Then there are the Groves recordings of King Olaf, Caractacus, and minor orchestral works, not to mention Boult's Apostles and Kingdom (never bettered in my view), and many other things. I suppose I am biased. I cut my teeth on many of these recordings, when they were first released on LP. Any disappointments for me? Perhaps. The final disk of Elgar conducting Elgar struck me as a thrown-together assortment of bits and pieces, a missed opportunity, but that's a small quibble given the sheer quality and quantity of fine things in this box.

by: Van Morrison

Release Date October 22, 2007
I'm sure that I'm not alone in mourning the absence of certain tracks on this extensive compilation, namely, 'Sense Of Wonder', 'Summertime In England', 'Sweet Thing' and 'It's All In The game' (the version from the 'In The Mood' CD is possibly the best cover version of any song by any artist).

However, despite the absense of this handful of songs, this is still a must have compilation. Spanning Van's extensive career, it captures not only the few commercial 'hits' that Van has recorded (such as 'Gloria', 'Brown Eyed Girl' and 'Here Comes The Night'), but extends into his more self-indulgent moments found buried within his many albums as well as including a selection of popular songs featured in movies ('Someone Like You', 'Moondance' and ... by: Steven Wright

Release Date February 08, 2005
Yes it's a live recording, so ofcourse there will be an audience there... but my Lord what a noisy irritating bunch of goons they are. I found it extremely conflicting with Steven Wright's quiet, unassuming, monotone delivery to have a whooping, yeehawing, gefawing, constantly clapping crowd in the recording, drowning out his dark humour.

by: Todd Rundgren

Release Date September 24, 2007
Come on readers.....you're being a bit hard on Jason Parkes' review. If you've not yet discovered this truly WONDROUS album, then try and find the time to do so. It will change your life. This comes from a time when "Our Hero" was at the top of his game, features a truck-load of his greatest songs and provides the perfect insight into Todd's (then) god-like genius. He writes, sings, plays and produces just about everything. (The exception being side 4 of the original double LP, where he's helped out by guest singers and musicians.)

So special that you will want to share it with the love of your life. (I did, but she still didn't hang around. Where are you, Pamela?) There's hardly a duff song in there. Trust me! However, i won't go as far as promising ... Read More:

Life in a Scotch Sitting Room Vol.2

CD-Charts > Music > Miscellaneous
by: Ivor Cutler

Release Date April 22, 2002
John Peel and his Radio 1 show must take the credit for introducing me and countless others to the unique and wonderfully surreal world of poet, singer, songwriter and storyteller Ivor Cutler. It's taken me a long time to get round to hearing this album which is now one of my favourite Ivor Cutler records.
These dark and hilarious tales of a dour and repressed Scottish family must have had their roots in Ivor Cutler's Scottish/Jewish upbringing in the bleak environment of 1920/30s Glasgow.
Ivor Cutler was an uncompromising artist who once said that working as a schoolteacher "unlocked his creativity". He was an acknowledged influence on the Bonzos and Monty Python and this marvellous record should appeal to anyone who appreciates off-the-wall humour combined ... Read More:

The Slade Box [Box Set]

CD-Charts > Music > Miscellaneous
by: Slade

Release Date October 02, 2006
It just seems incredible that Slade have had to wait this long for a Box Set when several lesser bands have had more than they actually deserve. Slade were the undoubted Kings of the 70s Charts, their singles and albums were pretty much unbeatable. I think if you listen to this set you will hear the story of a band that reached an unbelievable commercial high and then for some reason when they were making some of their best records the popularity started to decline. I bought this on the day of release and it sounds absolutely brilliant! The remastered tracks are all stunning and it just shows a band with two of the best songwriters ever to come out of the UK.
