Although I had reservations about buying this (after reading some of the other reviews on this and other sites) I succumbed as usual as I have done for every other box set Sony/Columbia has released.
Like the other boxes in this reissue series, there are many things to enjoy, but also a few "duffers". It's engrossing if you are a fan of Miles, but to be honest, it doesn't shed too much new light on his early `70s work (which is excellent when you listen to those works actually released at the time).
Aside from the "On The Corner" takes, the other highlights are the pieces which feature Pete Cosey and Dave Liebman. Liebman especially shines on the pieces he features on, with some excellent improvisation from him. Miles' improvisations ... Read More:

Creedence Clearwater Revival

This has got 6 disks, contained is a special Creedence box. It comes with a colour booklet with press clippings, biog and loads of images. It contains all of the albums they released including the Golliwogs, which is the first CD. The last disk and a half are live recordings and are great quality. The tracks on the other albums are full length versions so there are some extended guitar solos.

Definately recommended for any music fan

This three disc CD compilation released by EMI includes the same episodes included on their other Goon CDs (The Goons volumes 1 and 2). It also contains various great songs and sketches by Spike Milligan so overall it is good value for money.

Goon Show episodes include Tales of Old Dartmoor, Dishonoured, Tale of Men's Shirts, Missing Number 10 Downing Street, Red Fort, Robin Hood and His Merry Men. Dishonoured and Tale of Men's Shirts are widely considered as two of the Goons best episodes.

The shows are rather edited, noticeably the musical interludes are removed which may upset some people. I think BBC releases are considered to be better quality but that is reflected in the price.

The Duke of Plaza-Toro's instruction to the heirs to the throne of Barataria to preserve a demeanor "still sufficiently dignified" answers a criticism levelled at this series of Savoy Operas recorded under the direction of Sir Malcolm Sargent. Lacking dialogue, and using major British singers who never actually performed on stage in Gilbert and Sullivan, the presentation, especially of the first two of the series to appear, was considered too sedate. A great improvement was made when veteran singer George Baker was invited to participate in the remainder of the series. That Was The Year That Was

I have one gripe concerning this CD: it is at full price, though the recordings are 40 years old, and it only plays for 37 minutes. Apart from that, it is a delight and it was a favourite of Otto Klemperer's, no less. He especially loved "Alma", about the loves of Gustav Mahler's wife.

The Complete Adventures Of The Style Council

I rank Paul Weller at the same level as Lennon/McCartney and David/Bacharach as a composer. This box set captures almost all his work with The Style Council who, along with the Smiths, were the greatest band of the 1980s.

However it is not quite complete because it misses some great songs and in particular My Very Good Friend found on "Here's Some That Got Away". That album is a must buy.

Holding Nothing Back

I am a big fan of Tim's and already have 'when silence falls'. That made me search for other albums of his, I found this one on amazon and as I listen to it a lot,find myself worshipping without even thinking as the songs are so heartfelt. Hope he makes another soon.

It's about time this brilliant collection was up there in the best albums of all time lists. Utterly universal music, politically charged, each song a gem and the most brilliant singing and guitar playing. No pretension and affected star-posing. I'm at a loss to understand why this superb work isn't as oft cited as What's Going On and Blood on the Tracks. The gut-wrenching use of Burns' lyrics in Come Westlin' Winds, the righteous lament of The World Turned Upside Down, the delicate sentiments of Erin-Go-Bragh and Both Sides the Tweed and the strident Workers Song. What more do you want?

This is indeed a perfect partner for the subsequent "A Hundred Thousand Angels" album. The first 2 tracks alone should convince you that this is another meditation classic. It has the same winning formula of tuneful, contemplative music enriched with Lucinda Drayton's haunting vocals - a CD that you can actually sit back and listen to enraptured. A CD that really can help ease the cares of the world away, unlike the vast amount of banal 'musical wallpaper' that is on sale in garden centres, health shops etc. under the banner of 'New Age'. Don't buy these poor substitutes - go for the real thing, and whilst you are at it, perhaps treat yourself to some Secret Garden as well.
