I lived through the 60s & 70s. Initialy I was into heavy rock and underground music and have to confess that I had to be persuaded to listen to Folk/Rock. Steeleye Span started to convert me but it wasn,t untill I heard the the singing of Sandy on a Fairport album that I was fully converted. Her voice brought out a gentler side to me that I never knew I had. In her private life she was a little rascal, but her singing, sometimes sweet, sometimes strong got to the very heart of the music. It wasn't until the end of her life that her lifestyle began to show some ill affects. I have got all her albums but couldn't resist buying this collection. It contains so many unheard tracks, home demos and live recordings I thought it has to ... Read More:

From the town of Macclesfield in the early-80s came the infamous "Macc Lads", the crudest band in Christendom. As an example, the opening line of "Sweaty Betty" is
"She wore big knickers and she worked on't sewage farm" - and the lyrics go rapidly ruder from there on.
The Ladds' lyrics are set in a world where the mode of transport is either a Vauxhall Viva covered in rust or a no. 29 bus and everyone drinks 20 pints of Boddies on a Friday night. (Anyone who drinks halfs of lager, or washes their hair is distinctly suspect!).
Lyrics aside, for punk/metal this is musically quite a good album, and unlike many "novelty" records will bear repeated listening. The Beater's guitar riffs hold up well and of the 19 tracks on the CD, there ... Read More:

This a great collection for a number of reasons; not only does it deliver the standard favourites that you would expect, Stay With Me, Pool Hall Richard etc but it also has "live" & "in session" versions of many songs thrown in, too. There's an interesting live cover of Free's "Stealer" which shows how much respect bands of that time had for each other.
It's also great from a study of what music was like in the early 70's & the loose, easy style of the faces often belied the true talent which lay underneath & reminds us of what a great rock singer Rod Stewart is.
The production quality isn't always what we may expect nowadays but the "feel" is there & that, in my opinion, is what this band was all about.

It's about time this brilliant collection was up there in the best albums of all time lists. Utterly universal music, politically charged, each song a gem and the most brilliant singing and guitar playing. No pretension and affected star-posing. I'm at a loss to understand why this superb work isn't as oft cited as What's Going On and Blood on the Tracks. The gut-wrenching use of Burns' lyrics in Come Westlin' Winds, the righteous lament of The World Turned Upside Down, the delicate sentiments of Erin-Go-Bragh and Both Sides the Tweed and the strident Workers Song. What more do you want?

This is a great CD to own, if you don't remember Hinge and Bracket then buy their Dear Ladies DVD and then come back for this, or get both at once, you will not be disappointed. British comedy at its best.
Release Date February 28, 2005
I bought this CD for my mother-in-law as we both have similar taste in music. Since becoming Josh Groban fans we thought no one could match his fantastic voice, I was wrong .... Aled has a beautiful voice and all the tracks on this CD are brilliant. His version of 'O Holy Night' is just as good as Josh!
I will be buying Aled again!

I don't like the idea that the hair doesn't stand up on the back of my neck and arms from the shear glory of the sound of the Welsh here. I would much prefer (as I am sure anyone wanting to hear the famous voice of the Welsh in song)the true way the songs were meant to be. This doesn't even represent the voices I heard on the way to the mines of the miners themselves, now that was a wonderful thing to hear and to witness in the morn. The heart and love of home is whats missing. There are much better to chose from.

without doubt, this is one of the best piano / Christmas albums for listening to whilst opening presents and having Christmas lunch. Buy it for Next Christmas - you will not be disappointed

Sheer pleasure to listen & relax to. This has got to be their best album (and includes their Eurovision winner Nocturne)!
