Roy Buchanan is quite simply the greatest electric white blues guitarist. Technically awesome, but with soul to spare. He succumbed to drink and drugs and his studio efforts can be patchy ( my advice is stick to the compilations & live albums after his first two studio efforts) but this is the exception, and by far his best studio effort. Recorded during a short tee total period in 1985 for the chicago blues company Alligator records this was nominated for a grammy and deservedly so. It starts off with a Bach Fugue played on a telecaster and just gets better and better. Think Stevie Ray Vaughan with 4 arms, 2 brains and an extra 10,000 volts in him. Killer Blues that have never been matched since his untimely death in 1988.

Roy Buchanan was one of the most expressive blues guitar players around. "The Messiah will come again" ranks amongst one of his most heartfelt, gut wrenching tracks! Gary Moore covered this track on one of his singles, but couldn't get the same intensity. There is some sweet country playing ("Sweet Dreams", "Hey Good lookin'") but the standouts are his blues tracks. Probably the best telecaster playing in the world!

I much prefer Norah Jones on this even though 'Come way with me' is great. I wish she would do more jazz than country. This album is superb and deserves to be known more. 'New York City' is my favourite track.

Made during the Reagan-Bush trickledown years as homelessness in the USA was being normalized and the national debt run up on a black budget of Afghani heroin and Contra crack pipelining into U.S. cities, this is the darkest and bleakest album by an artist that never would've been mistaken for a party boy anyway.
For nuanced guitar listeners Richard Thompson is credited on the sessions, but it turns out from the outtakes that appear on the recent ANYWAY THE WIND BLOWS: J.J. CALE ANTHOLOGY that Thompson's most signature guitar sounds intertwined with Cale's slithery lines on "Santa Cruz," and that wound up on #8's cutting room floor.

The very best of, not just soul music, but music.Listen, clap your hands, dance, stamp your feet. Enjoy this wonderful compilation, not just for the genius of Otis and the better known artists, but to discover the lesser known and sadly underplayed gems among them.

This being my introduction to R.L. Burnside, I am staggered that a man with his background has taken pure blues and infused rock, rap and dj to create a very unique sound. Very highly recommended!! "Goin' Down South" is my current favourite and one that will have people asking you who that is playing. But I suspect that many other songs on here will burn themselves into my mind. I love the Hooker sounding "Bird Without A Feather" and his whole new aproach to "Rollin' And Tumblin'".
This is blues with a raw driving edge to it. Besides the John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters influences Burnside has what can only be a down-to-earth approach to life. I think he must have been quite a personality with a great sense of humour. I will definately be ... Read More:

I agree with the previous reviewer about the subdued atmosphere on this CD but also I found the performances to be somewhat below par. Having seen Robert Cray live on a number of occasions I can vouch for his performances usually being far superior to this live album. "Live at the BBC" is far more spirited.

This album is exceptional. Robben brother Mark on the harp is simply amazing, Robbens guitar work is inspiring. Every song on this album is a gem. Buy this album you won't be dissapointed
