R.L. Burnside sings with emotion, this man KNOWS BLUES, he has LIVEDBLUES, and STILL HAS HOPE ... tinged with an Alabama accent, he sings with a southern drawl, full of the realities of life. The liner booklet says it best (& I quote): "The last genuine performer of raw Mississippi hill country sounds as well as cutting edge crossover artist the blues has had in the past 30 years." Honesty, depth, detail, raw emotions, earthy statements: it's all here & more! Great lyrics, great slide guitar playing, too. "Too Many Ups" one of the tracks, is a play on words: "You gotta look UP to the man ... too many ups, too many ups, too many upside down", "You gotta coer up", "You gotta catch up", "You gotta get paid up", "Too many upside downs". Another good album, and I've got over half a dozen of his already. The three tracks that really stand out for me are What You Need (Good Man), Your Pal and Back Door Slam.
I like to make up compilations of my favorite tracks of an artist I really like and the three tracks above are excellent, especially Back Door Slam, just put it on repeat. Bob dosen't usually use effects and I can only describe it as a little like the Harry Lime Theme, and it works brilliantly. Thers's also some intense finger work and I love his voice and the way he picks and bends notes.
Two of the tracks, Survivor and Distant Shore are OK musically but have a strong reference to Desert Storm/Military Service.
Glad to see and hear he and his band are still ... Read More:

Reading a book on the blues, I came across Johnny Winter, who is regarded as one of the greatest slide guitar players that has ever lived. Never having heard him before, I bought a copy of this CD on the strength of that comment. Awesome is the best word to describe Johnny's playing, whether on electric or acoustic guitar, and this album shows him at his best. I cant even begin to dream of being able to play guitar like he does on "Dallas", an awesome example of slide on his steel National. How many fingers does this man have? Vocals is not Johnny's strongest suit, and may be an acquired taste, but his guitar playing outweighs this flaw. Being first released in the late 60s on vinyl, the only down side is the comparatively short playing time (45 mins or so).

Bonnie's second record contained a more varied mix of sounds and styles that her mainly blues debut album. We get two early 60s R&B numbers - Barbara George's "I know" and Rudy Clarke's wonderful "If you got to make a fool of somebody", both handled superbly. Also, two songs by contemporary singer-songwriters; Chris Smither's "Love me like a man" and Jackson Browne's "Under a falling sky", again Bonnie sounds completely at home and delivers great versions. She also contributes three of her own songs and charmingly reinterprets one of her mentor, Sippie Wallace's, songs "You got to know how". For me the record's best tracks are two ballads that I would say remain two of Bonnie's best ever performances - Joel Zoss's plaintive "Too long at the fair" and "Love has no pride" by ... Read More:

This five-disc, 6½-hour box set is by far the most thorough and well-researched overview of the genre. The 59-page booklet is exceptionally well written and extremely informative, and almost every major blues artist from the 1920s to the 1990s is represented, from Mamie Smith's 1920 recording "Crazy Blues" over Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, to Keb'Mo' and Shemekia Copeland.
Disc 1 covers the earliest acoustic blues and "blues-related" material by the likes of Louis Armstrong and Jimmie Rodgers. Disc two focuses primarily on the slightly more urban blues forms of the 30s and early 40s. Disc 3 and half of disc 4 is primary electric 50s and 60s blues, and the rest of this admirable collection is devoted to more contemporary blues artists, both black and white. Read More:
