Willie Dixon is the featured performer on only six of these thirty-six songs. But he is there on the rest as well, composing, producing, playing bass, and usually taking a back seat to stars like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter and Bo Diddley.
All of these songs are written and composed or co-composed by Willie Dixon, including classic blues hits like Little Walter's "My Babe", Bo Diddley's "Pretty Thing", Muddy Waters' "Hoochie Coochie Man", and Howlin' Wolf's magnificent "Hidden Charms" with its fiery guitar solo.
But there are many other superb songs here as well, including lesser-known tracks like the delightful jazzy number "Violent Love", performed by Dixon, guitarist Ollie Crawford, and pianist Leonard ... Read More:

After the relative polish of '5', J. J. Cale reclaimed some of the smoky ambience of earlier albums with this 1980 offering. The blues of 'Shades' leans a little toward jazz with the five-minute instrumentals, 'Pack My Jack' and 'Cloudy Day', but both of these, especially the sax on the latter are superb. 'Runaround' is of a similar style. The more familiar blues/boogie is represented on 'Deep Dark Dungeon' and 'Love Has Been Gone', which features some great guitar interplay. 'What Do You Expect' is a funkier track, while 'Wish I Had Not Said That' is a slower, more reflective item. On some of the tracks, Christine Lakeland adds an almost whispering harmony vocal which has a slightly eerie effect. Meanwhile, 'Mama Don't' lends a touch of humour and ... Read More:
Although a big Charles fan, I must admit that Betty Carter works on a different level, showing the difference between the genious of popular music and a great jazz-vocalist.
However, this doesn't mean one should put Charles down; as he shows in the second half of the CD (without Carter), he is a brilliant singer, with a great sense for rhythm and emotion. Recomended both for jazz audience (thanks to Carter) and for Charles' fans.

I think the other reviewers have been excessively harsh and, in my view, both unjust and inaccurate in their review of Thunderbird. In fact while echoing their views on past triumphs, I think that Thunderbird is an many ways more accessible to new audiences of Cassandra's work. I would also say the tracks on this release do not exhibit any of the traits Cassandra has had in some of her earlier work to be on ocassion rather self-indulgent in the treatment of certain pieces. So Cassandra, just like Mr Dylan had to do when he went electric, do what you think is right and you will carry many of your less vocal fans like me along with you.

as a fan and a musician, this album changed my life and i have found it to be an amazing piece of music art work. obviously, not everyone will like it but robben ford is capable of playing various styles effortlessly and playing complex jazz harmony while mixing it in his blues. plus he has a wonderful voice!

Sean Costello, was I believe, without doubt the best young singer/songwriter and blues performer of his generation, before his tragic and untimely death earlier this year. This album is evidence of his growing talent and displays just some of the potential that he had. There are some great tracks on this album in particular 'Have You no Shame' and the prophetic 'Going Home' which you just can't help but be moved by. This is a great album, by a great young talent and a must for any record collection......!!!!

I bought this accidentally - thinking I was buying a new album by DB II - yeah, there's a clue in the name! Lovely stuff - DB (senior) has as good a voice as any Blues singer I've heard. Unsurprisingly (he's a drummer to) the drums drive each song. Highlight - title track - one of the best songs of the past decade.
p.s. DB II also appears on a couple of tracks - and listen out as well to the SRV song (DB co-wrote many Stevie Ray Vaughan classics). Beautiful groove
